BODY & SOUL: Healthy Indoor Living

by Mike Holmes Jr.

The amount of time that we spend indoors might surprise you. Most Canadians thought that they spent, on average, 68 per cent of their time indoors. A recent survey called The Indoor Generation Report, published by YouGov, found that we actually spend 90 per cent of our time inside.

Many of you, who are of my parents’ and my grandparents’ generation, would say that they spent more than 32 per cent of their time outdoors as a child – heading out at daybreak and returning home as the sun set. This was before technology, and when parenting styles were a tad more relaxed. Whether you’re still working, or are retired, think about the time that you spend in the office, at the gym or inside your own environment. Sometimes this has to do with health issues, but our lifestyles are more centred around indoor activities than they used to be.

Photo, bigstockphoto.com

HEALTH CONSEQUENCES

We all know that our physical, and mental, health are impacted by remaining sedentary, and not getting outside for a breath of fresh air. “The rapid change in our lifestyles, from spending large amounts of time outdoors for work or relaxation, to becoming an indoor generation, carries with it several risks, not least when it comes to health consequences from dark, poorly ventilated homes,” says Dr. Hilary Jones. “Equally, we must make sure that we’re getting the light exposure that we need to protect our immune systems. Many of us do not realize that lack of light can affect our sleep patterns, which, in turn, increases our risk of depression, diabetes and heart disease.”

AIR QUALITY CULPRITS

Our everyday routines, like cooking and cleaning, as well as something as simple as lighting a candle, all contribute to the quality of our indoor air. If we spend too much time in a cramped office space or a small room, the dust, alone, can increase our risk of contracting a respiratory disease like asthma. This risk is higher for children and seniors.

While many of us would like to think that our indoor air quality is no worse than what we breathe outside, it can be up to five times more polluted.

SNUG AS A BUG IN A RUG

So many studies and reports only highlight the alarming results. However, when we know better, we do better. Once you know how you are personally affecting the quality of your indoor air, you can make small changes to help improve it.

One of the most obvious things that you can do to let fresh air into your home is to open the windows – especially when you’re bathing, cooking or cleaning. By doing so, you help to keep allergens, like dust mites, under control.

NIGHT AND DAY

There’s nothing like a good dose of sunlight to brighten our frame-of-mind. The Indoor Generation Report also found that 63 per cent of respondents believe that daylight had a significant effect on their mood, and research shows that daylight is the primary cue used by the human circadian clock, which helps to regulate our natural sleep/wake cycle.

We’re fortunate to live in a country with changing seasons, and wide open spaces. No matter how much, or how little, you’re able to do on a physical level, make sure that you get outside whenever you can.

To help raise awareness of the importance of healthy indoor air quality, VELUX has launched a short film on YouTube called The Indoor Generation. With close to eight million views, it’s worth checking out.

Outdoor Life More Than Pleasant, It’s Much Healthier

Future generation of Canadians face health risk from life indoor

The VELUX Group has unveiled the results of The Indoor Generation report – a survey that found an overwhelming misconception about the impact on our health caused by spending too much time indoors, especially on children, whose bedrooms which can be the most polluted room in the house.

The Indoor Generation refers to the growing number of people who spend the vast majority of their time indoors – currently 90 per cent of their lives – compared to previous generations.

Everyday home life activities, such as cooking, cleaning, showering, lighting candles, air drying clothes indoors and even sleeping and breathing, all contribute to polluted indoor air, which over time can lead to mould and damp homes, increasing our risk of developing asthma, respiratory diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Pollutants present in everyday household objects are releasing toxins into our homes – detergents and the plastic toys that we give our children to play with, as well as building materials, are just some of the items which can worsen our indoor air quality.

It’s believed more children will suffer from asthma or allergies unless homes and public buildings are better ventilated, and the chances of being diagnosed with asthma increase by 40% if you spend too much time in damp, mouldy buildings.

The survey also found a significant disconnect between how people think they live their lives and the way they actually do, with only a quarter of people (26%) in Canada saying they spend 21 hours or more inside. But the actual figure is far more worrying, with previous research discovering a new ‘indoor generation’ who spend about 90% of their time – and often in dark, poorly ventilated and unhealthy buildings. In fact, 1 in 6 Europeans live in unhealthy buildings.

Peter Foldbjerg, head of daylight energy and indoor climate at VELUX, said: “We are increasingly turning into a generation of indoor people where the only time we get daylight and fresh air mid-week is on the commute to work or school. Modern life can often involve an early start to the day, race to work where we spend eight to ten hours inside an office and then straight home, or sometimes making a stop off for groceries or for a quick workout inside a damp and sweaty fitness centre.

“Most people think that indoor air, the air in their homes is better than the air we breathe outdoors, but, it may be worse, up to five times more polluted than outside,” said Nels Moxness, President & CEO, VELUX Canada Inc. “The numbers in our report indicate a lack of awareness about the impact of always being indoors – and today’s indoor generation children are those who are most likely to suffer from conditions that affect their physiological and psychological state. Through this report we aim to educate and foster discussion around healthier living habits.”

VELUX has launched a short film “The Indoor Generation” to raise awareness of the importance of living in healthy homes and the small changes that everyone can make to improve their living environment and indoor air quality. Check it out here.

Six simple steps to make the air inside your home healthier:

  • Open your windows at least three to four times a day to allow fresh air in and open your blinds to let the sun/natural light into your home
  • Keep bathroom doors closed and turn on the extractor fan or open a window when showering
  • Turn hood fan on when cooking and open your windows
  • Don’t burn candles
  • Dry clothes outside
  • Clean regularly with environmentally friendly products
  • Inspect home fans
  • Hypoallergenic air filters in HVAC systems and air purifiers

Rebecca Hay Designs – National Home Show/RENO & DECOR Booth inspired by classic and casual lakeside living.

Rebecca Hay Designs is pleased to announce we will be providing the design creation for the upcoming Design Intervention booth #4118 at the National Home Show.

Muskoka inspired and naturally nautical, I based the RENO & DECOR booth’s decor scheme on this classic summer home aesthetic. We have incoproated walls in painted white shiplap to add textural interest while creating a relaxed cottage living atmosphere. The crisp white walls will be balanced by the soft and varied wood tones of the furniture which was all selected from our furniture sponsor this year UpCountry and added in some fun custom hand printed pillows by Cottage Cloth which emphasize the nautical theme and easy going vibe.

We created these outdoor living spaces by adding a rich night sky mural provided by Ruth Baker Design and paired it with outdoor furnishings to simulate lakeside summer living. A custom “boathouse” bar was designed to create an outdoor entertaining zone, built by Pure Kitchens and paired with sleek black stone counters from Select Granite and a luxe faucet from Watermarks. In addition to comfortable indoor/outdoor living and entertaining, we wanted to include a bedroom vignette. With a buffalo check pattern created by Peacock Living, the walls are graphic, bold and fun.

The booth showcases a glimpse into lakeside living at it’s best.

Come visit me and the team while at the National Home Show this March and get design inspired!

On Monday, March 13 @ 2pm and Friday, March 16 @ 2pm – be sure to catch Rebecca on stage along with Kate Davidson and Linda Mazur as part of RENO & DECOR’s “Designer Panel”. The panel will be discussing “Realities Of A Reno”

Regardless of the size of your project or the footprint of your space, creating  a beautiful and luxurious aesthetic in our homes can be accomplished with a well laid out plan.  Style and luxury is not determined by the size of your space, but the design.  We can garner inspiration by all that we see, but realism is always necessary when renovating, not only about the space you’re working with but also your budget.  A good design can deliver all that your heart desires while creating for you a wonderfully luxurious, relaxing and inviting home that reflects your individuality and needs for years to come.

If you’re considering an upcoming renovation, join GTA designers Linda Mazur, Rebecca Hay, Kate Davidson at the National Home Show stage, where this panel of designers will be discussing how to make the most of your upcoming home renovations without compromising on luxury, style or functionality.  They will take you through the key aspects of renovating, share their top renovation strategies as well as fave kitchen, bath and home products to consider including in your homes in 2018.  Get inspired and reno ready in 2018!
