9 arch trend ideas

Have you noticed that arches are having a major moment in design? The first thing that pops into my mind when I think of an arch (or arc) is the rainbow, that perfect burst of colour in unison after a rainfall; it’s a natural wonder that always inspires. Architecture often mimics the natural world, and it’s no different with the arch, as it appeared in design as early as the second millennium BC. And the Romans famously used 200 arches in the construction of the Colosseum. Arches tend to lift the eye upward, symbolizing support, lightness and openness. These days, you can find the classic design element not just in doorways but on everything from cushions to earrings.

Rattan and cane

Au naturel with retro rattan and classic cane

Latest News

Au naturel with retro rattan and classic cane

Not just reserved for outdoor furniture anymore, rattan and cane are having a big moment inside the home too. How fitting after spending so much time indoors this spring in our collective effort to flatten the curve. With the summer season upon us, why not blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living even more? The truth is, this “au naturel” trend had already taken shape pre-pandemic. Generally, we are gravitating towards natural materials that bring in the soul and elements from nature into our abodes. Cane and rattan are natural materials, which both derive from the rattan palm, a vine from Southeast Asia. When the rattan palm is processed, it splits into two parts: cane is the thin core reed, used in webbed patterns seen in furniture applications, such as the back of a chair; the larger rattan reed material is used to weave wicker furniture and basketry.

The rising use of cane and rattan in decor is also due to the ever-growing popularity of grand-millennial style adopted by some millennials, AKA the new traditionalists. Think chintz upholstery, tassels, needlepoint and in this case, furniture made from materials once reserved for your grandmother’s screened porch.

Trending or not, cane and rattan pieces make a statement without adding visual weight in a space. You can bring in the vintage weaves with a light fixture, storage unit, chair or decor item. The major appeal for us is the cool coastal beach vibe rattan and cane evoke, and who doesn’t want to add some sweet summertime favourites inside our homes all year long?

Floral motifs in home decor predicted for spring in RENO & DECOR’s Trend Watch

Just like we count on seeing the first tulips in our garden emerge as a sure sign of the arrival of spring, floral motifs seem to sprout every year around this time in fashion and decor as well. We covered the oversized, tropical-inspired blooms trend five years ago here on the trend page but there has been a shift in the type of floral print we are seeing. From large-scale, edgy-looking flowers to small, delicate ones that look like they took root in the ’80s – this is not your grandmother’s tribute to the dated floral theme though; mixed with modern and traditional pieces, the minute petals breathe new life into a space.

Maria Raco, founder of exclusive designer wallpaper showroom NewWall, talks about the current take on the sought-after springtime trend. “The oversized floral trend had its shining moment a few years ago but the current trend is definitely smaller, very real-looking and bursting with colour,” says Raco. She affirms the popular posies reflect our incessant need to bring the beauty of the outdoors into our interiors. “Flowers represent beauty and installing a floral wallpaper is the perfect way to achieving this in your home.”

Of course, seeing the delicate blossoms after a Canadian winter evoke feelings of hope and happiness as we anticipate imminent real-time outdoors enjoying nature’s beauty first-hand. The flowers may be smaller and echo another period in time but they keep us in an eternal spring frame of mind.

Trend watch 2020 – Pantone Colour of the Year

With 2020 marking the 20th anniversary of colour authority, Pantone, choosing the colour of the year, the pressure was on to define and set the tone for a new decade. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Interesting how the company started the tradition at the dawn of this millennium with Cerulean Blue, the colour of the sky on a serene, crystal clear day connoting restful, peaceful and relaxing times. An antidote, if you will, to calm the uncertainty of the new century and the Y2K scare that predominated the period.

It seems we need the same type of reassurance as we embark upon this century’s version of the roaring ’20s (let’s hope it ends better than that one did!). Imprinted in our psyches as a restful colour, Classic Blue brings a sense of peace to the human spirit, offering refuge. It also aids concentration and brings laser-like clarity, re-centering our thoughts.

After two decades of interpreting the colour culture of the time, Pantone remains loyal to the much-loved blue family, encouraging the human race in uncertain times. It is somewhat poetic that a clear daytime sky blue inaugurated the century, and 20 years later, Classic Blue depicts the colour of the sky at day’s end — dusk — a time of day when we process the day’s events and anticipate what the evening hours will bring. As far as decorating with this universal favourite shade of blue, the options are endless…from large furniture pieces, like a supple velvet sofa to pops of the versatile colour on walls, fixtures, dishware and bedding. The sky is the limit…literally.

Nothing sparks design inspiration as much as the sights and colours we soak in during our international travels. They awaken our senses and breathe new life into our design taste buds. It is no wonder we want to somehow recreate the stimulating visuals we experienced abroad into our interiors upon our return.

This season, fill your home with fresh air, clean neutrals, touches of abstract watercolour, and pops of rich mustard and pistachio hues. The soft mixtures of white walls, warm woods, and abstract glazes make your home feel calm and light, combined with terracotta accents, which ground the space.

TERRACOTTA is making a major comeback.

Like an old friend you haven’t seen in decades (since the ’90s to be exact)

Much of our modern-day stresses are due to digital overload; more than ever, the remedy is to embrace Mother Nature’s colours and raw materials in our homes. Nothing does that better than Terracotta—a rich, warm and ancient material—the colour is also enjoying a resurgence as we get back to basics. The warm, earthy, organic tone we are seeing this time is lighter than before—less brick, more pink—a fusion of previous it-colours, blush pink and copper. The dusky pink echoes architecture from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Mexico.

Not that 70’s YELLOW

The nature and global-inspired theme continues with our second colour pick in the spotlight. In fashion, varying shades of yellow pervaded the Spring/Summer ’18 collections… in interiors though, it isn’t that intimidatingly bright yellow, instead it is an earthy, golden ochre, some call mustard, a shade which works well with the warmer colour palette that we are gravitating to this year. In an earth-toned space, mustard yellow adds the final touch to lighten the mood. Although it pairs well with just about any colour scheme, mixing ochre with navy will create a rich and sophisticated look.

We end this trio of trend colours with what is proverbially known as the cherry on top…My Preferred Pastel

PISTACHIO

Known as the “green gold” that grows at the feet of Etna, its shell contains the delicate flavour and aroma of Sicily, the island of sea and sun. Besides the fact that it is my absolute favourite gelato flavour (and pretty much anything made with pistachios), the pretty pastels of sorbet are a big trend in interiors this year. This particular hue brings freshness and energy to a room as well as inspring optimism and a festive mood. Much like that feeling you get when you indulge in your favourite ice cream.
