Redesign your bathroom with safety in mind

Latest News

Redesign your bathroom with safety in mind

No matter your age, safety in the bathroom is paramount. Many of our clients are redesigning their homes, not only for themselves, but also for their young grandchildren. Now, more than ever, it’s easy to add additional safety features that are not only functional, but are great looking.

Slip-resistant flooring

Slips and falls are the most common accidents in the home. Tub surfaces can be especially slippery, so consider adding slip-resistant strips.

When installing tiles, the grout lines actually reduce the slippage rate. If replacing your bathroom floor, or tiling a shower, consider anti-slip mosaic tiles with grout lines that are no more than two inches apart. If you prefer the look of large-format tiles, look for textured porcelain with a honed finish.

Stylish support

Regardless of your age or physical ability, grab bars are not only functional, but they can be decorative. Having a grab bar by the toilet and in the shower provides extra security. They can also double as towel bars. Sleek options are now available from a wide range of companies in various colours and finishes that match faucets and shower fixtures. Textured finishes prevent your hand from slipping when holding on.

When extra support is required, install hand grips and grab bars.

Consider adding grab bars in the bathtub and shower areas. Also, lower the height of valve controls and handheld shower heads. When selecting a tub, choose one that’s low profile, so that it’s easy to get in and out of.

Curb-less showers

This has become a popular trend. Not only do curb-less showers look sleek, but they also help to reduce the risk of tripping when entering and exiting. If you’re not a bather, consider removing the tub altogether and replacing it with a large shower that includes handheld sprays and a bench seat. If you’re going this route, make sure that your contractor knows how to grade the floor and where to place the drain.

Commode considerations

If you have arthritic knees or other limitations, standing up from a low toilet can be excruciating. A standard bowl height is 15 inches off the ground. Today’s ‘comfort height’ toilets feature bowls that are 17 to 19 inches high. The higher bowl is not only good for knees and backs, but also for taller people and those with mobility issues.

Further tushy comfort can be found on ‘intelligent toilets’. These smart privies come with seat warmers, and also have built-in cleansing sprays and warm air dryers to assist with personal hygiene. Some brands offer a night light feature, as well.

Seat-ability

Falling is often a concern when in the shower. And, for some, standing can be very tiresome. A shower seat is a great addition, along with an accessible hand-held shower. If you’re tight for space, fold-down shower seats can be stored when not in use. When sitting, it’s easier to shave and bathe, and it’s far more relaxing.

Single handle, or touch-activated, faucets are ideal for those who have difficulty turning knobs. The same concept holds true for doors – lever handles are much easier to operate.

When outfitting your bathroom, there’s no need to compromise on beauty – or safety.

The 2019 Toronto Fall Home Show

As fall brings changes to the weather, it also inspires us to make improvements in our homes. Whether you’re looking to do a big kitchen renovation, a small bathroom revamp or convert your laneway into a livable space, the 2019 Toronto Fall Home Show will help make this a reality.

With more than three decades of experience helping homeowners, condo dwellers and renters restructure, reorganize and restyle their spaces, this year’s show is set to once again bring the best experts to the GTA.

The 2019 Toronto Fall Home Show is a source for consumers to connect with the right people and find the right solutions for their living space (even ones to help you get rid of ghosts).

Here’s a peek at what will be featured:

Tiny Village

With rising real estate prices, there’s a tiny movement happening in Toronto. Small space living is becoming more of a reality for most people, with an increase in small condos, container homes and even laneway/infill housing. There are 47,000 lots on laneways that exist today, which can provide homeowners ample opportunities to supplement their income. Still, small space living doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. The Tiny Village brings together the best of small space design, with units from True North Tiny Home and Eva Lanes.

Bad reno or paranormal activity?

For the first year ever, the Toronto Fall Home Show is bringing its very own paranormal activity expert, so you can figure out if the creaks in your floorboards are just your pipes… or if they’re ghosts! Chat with paranormal investigator Glenn Laycock for tips on what to do if you have an unwanted guest from beyond in your home, or take a Ghost Walk through the haunted Horse Palace.

Designer Pumpkin Patch

Ditch your plastic Halloween decor for chic and stylish pumpkins to give curb appeal a whole new meaning, with tips from the exquisite Designer Pumpkin Patch. Let designer Nicholas Rosaci inspire your own posh pumpkin design, make one yourself or purchase a pre-styled option, with all proceeds going to the SickKids Foundation.

Kitchen stage

The kitchen is the focal point of a home, and the 2019 Toronto Fall Home Show will be no different. Sit back and enjoy some of the city’s top chefs cooking up a storm on the kitchen stage and pick up tips from several expert speakers, including Ramsin Khachi, Marie Kondo Way expert Effy Nicopoulos, Rebecca Hay, Emmanuel Belliveau and Chef Christopher Woods.

Easy, breezy, cottage style, create that relaxed, casual look in your city home

Latest News

Easy, breezy, cottage style, create that relaxed, casual look in your city home

Photography by Jason Hartog

Summer days are the things that dreams are made of. Long and lazy weekends curled up with a book by a window, or soaking up the sun’s rays on a lounger outdoors. It’s certainly my favourite time of year. It’s when the weekend warriors brave the traffic and head out of the city for fresh air and cool lakes. Whether you have a summer retreat of your own, or simply want to create the cottage vibe in your own home, here are my favourite ways to bring easy, breezy cottage style to your decor.

Freshen it up with a coat of white paint

For walls, light and bright is always right. My go-to wall colour is Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White. It’s bright and fresh but still feels warm.

White paint works on any wall and acts as a great blank canvas for pops of colour. Summer is all about colour, so you can go bold in your colour choices everywhere else and they will POP against the white backdrop.

“BLUE IS HANDS-DOWN THE FRESHEST WAY TO CREATE A CRISP COTTAGE ESTHETIC.”

Incorporate natural wood tones

I always say that a touch of wood is a must in any decor, but this is especially true of a cottage. I love to add the warmth of wood with hardwood flooring or a vintage wood table. The wood accents also help to balance all those white walls by adding character and warmth.

When in doubt, use blue

Blue is my hue. Summer homes need a little pop of colour but if you’re too shy to pick one, or worried your choice won’t work, you can never fail with blue. In my mind, blue is hands-down the freshest way to create a crisp cottage esthetic. I love nautical navy but aqua and robin’s egg blues work, too. Layer in this colour with art, pillows and even lighting.

Add vintage finds

Vintage furniture and decor add a casual and comfortable vibe. This is the perfect time of year to go to antique markets or simply wander consignment stores for the perfect vintage piece of furniture. Not only does it add loads of personality and tell a story, but it’s easy on the environment too. Sustainability is important to consider and finding unique and fine objects at a local antique fair will be a great conversation starter for those summer soirees.

Use natural textiles

Nothing says easy, breezy cottage style more than white and neutral fabrics blowing in the wind. Textiles such as cotton, wool and jute add a relaxed feel. It’s okay if they wrinkle or aren’t perfect. That’s the idea!

If you are like me, you truly appreciate getting out of the big city from time to time to enjoy a slower pace of life, but it’s not always possible. So why not create that casual weekend vibe all summer long right in your own home? Just remember to slow down the pace and maximize the fun factor.

How to create a luxurious bathroom

Latest News

How to create a luxurious bathroom

Photography By Stephani Buchman

Enlarging a small master bathroom can often be impractical. You don’t need to move walls or break the bank in order to create big luxury in a small master bathroom.

When you’re tight on space, but want to have it all, you’ve got to get creative. And that’s exactly what was done in this elegant, compact ensuite bathroom. When we were hired to transform this home, the biggest challenge was how to update their master ensuite while also making it more functional. There was an oversized and very dated jacuzzi tub that took up almost the entire room. A natural reaction would have been to remove the tub and add in a large two-person shower. However, we wanted to have our cake and eat it too, so instead, we added a show-stopping soaker tub combined with a shower.

SIZE DOESN’T SACRIFICE FORM OR FUNCTION

Many large, luxury bathrooms today have a separate shower and soaking tub. In a smaller bathroom, it can be a challenge to find a tub that fits. In this case, the master ensuite is used by multiple members and generations in the household. We found a perfect fit with Victoria and Albert’s Vertralla tub. With its updated yet classic looks, it provided the luxury of a deep soaker tub, but on a smaller scale. The bonus of this particular tub is that it’s made of volcanic limestone, which helps to retain heat much longer than other tubs. Great for long soaks!

MASTER BATH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Although it’s a master ensuite, we had to factor children into the design. It is a three-storey home with the kids’ bathroom on the third floor, and the homeowners wanted the option to bathe their children in their master ensuite. We added a waterfall stone ledge for toys and soaps, and a built-in linen tower to house towels and baskets of bath toys.

A BALANCED MIX OF LIGHTING OPTIONS

Another essential way to add glam to any bathroom is with great lighting.

Too often lighting a bathroom is low on the list of priorities relative to other rooms in the house. Proper lighting is essential to making the most of this space. Your bathroom should feel bright and clean, so good overhead and task lighting are key. But don’t overlook mood lighting. You want the ability to create atmosphere that’s relaxing and spa-like, especially for those late night soaks and long steamy showers. The chandelier hanging over the tub adds warmth and sparkle, while the decorative sconces illuminate your face sufficiently for putting makeup on without overdoing it.

Designer tip: Always add dimmers to switches

FINISHES & FIXTURES

Another key tip that most people overlook, and almost every designer uses, is to tile the walls of your bathroom. If you want a cleanable surface and high-end look, this is how to get it. I adore using a large marble, natural quartz tile, if the budget permits, otherwise a nice oversized subway tile will do the trick. In this bathroom, we selected wall tile for behind the tub—a super practical choice when little ones want to splash around!

And last but not least, you can increase a small bathroom feeling of extravagance by adding some flair to functional items like: faucets, mirrors and cabinet hardware. For a modest investment, you can turn everyday, often-overlooked elements into items that underscore the overall beauty of the room. Replacing a typical bathroom mirror with a uniquely shaped decorative one like we did here is another way to elevate a small bathroom to premium status. The modern brass cabinet knobs are the jewelry of the room as they add sparkle and interest.

Don’t be afraid to mix metals here too. We love the look of brass faucets and fixtures but we couldn’t quite fit it into our budget. Instead we opted to mix chrome and brass, bringing the gold sparkle into elements like the lighting and hardware.

Achieving ultimate comfort and luxury in your small-space bathroom is at your fingertips, by mixing a variety of high and low elements cohesively.
