Minto Communities and Metropia launch Union Village in Markham

Minto Communities and Metropia have launched Union Village, the master-planned community, to resounding success in Markham. The initial phase one launch saw more than 330 homes – a mix of single-family homes, back-to-back townhomes, rear-lane and traditional townhomes – sold over a four-day period.

In addition to its prime location, Union Village features a variety of attractive architectural options, abundant greenspace with family-friendly and active living amenities, and every residence benefits from fundamentals of feng shui and the crowning green features of Minto Communities’ commitment to sustainability.

“The success of Union Village really speaks to the quality of the project at every facet,” says Peter Maleganovski, director of land development, Minto Communities. “We knew designing a community in the centre of a municipality like Markham would demand excellence in design and expert planning for residents. It was essential for us to emphasize the beauty of the natural surroundings and create communal spaces for families to gather. We’re so glad purchasers have responded so positively to Union Village and are excited to release more residences in our later phases of launch.”

Union Village comprises two parcels of development, split down the middle by the Bruce Creek. Maximizing on the stunning natural landscapes of the area, Bruce Creek and its valley are being restored and included as part of an extensive pedestrian and cycling trail system which provides residents with access to Main Street within approximately 20 minutes. Union Village also features preserved wetlands, several new parks, playgrounds, and the incorporation of a century-old Bur Oak tree as a park focal point and gathering place for community members.

Union Village is located in the heart of Markham and within walking distance to the charming heritage village Unionville. Retail, restaurant and cultural amenities are all close by, with nearby community centres and libraries, top-performing schools, exciting events and entertainment options. Historic Unionville offers a charming, small town sentiment, with numerous attractions to revisit Markham’s past.

Union Village offers a wide range of housing types, giving residents the opportunity to select a home that best suits their lifestyle. Home sizes range from 1,267 to 4,508 sq. ft., in architectural styles such as French, Second Empire, French Country, Period Revival/Tudor, Canadiana, Modern and West Coast Contemporary. All interior floorplans have been designed with input by feng shui master, Paul Ng.

In addition to the consistency of unique interior layouts which feature ideal energy flow, residents still can customize their interiors by selecting the features and finishes of their choice through the Minto Communities Design Centre. Sustainable features within homes include Energy Star for New Homes certification, LED lighting, water efficient fixtures, low VOC paint and Green Label Plus-certified carpeting for indoor air quality.

Ontario’s most Green home builders and suppliers were honoured Feb. 28 at the 2018 EQ Awards. More than 250 guests, including Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, celebrated 20 years of EnerQuality along with the accomplishments of its leaders with the official announcement of the award winners.

“It speaks volumes to see how the longevity of EnerQuality and our certifications like Energy Star have continued to remain relevant and grow in impact over the years,” say Corey McBurney, president of EnerQuality. “The 2018 EQ Awards allowed the industry to celebrate where we have come from and spotlight the pioneers who are joining forces to carve a new path for the future with programs such as our Energy Star Multifamily Highrise certification.”

“The People’s Choice Award was an amazing new addition to the Awards, allowing us to involve the greater community in both recognizing and selecting the winner,” adds Shannon Bertuzzi, vice-president of market development at EnerQuality. “Our certifications are voluntary investments by our builders. EnerQuality is committed to ensuring the greater public is aware of the investment these builders are making for the sustainability of these communities.”

2018 Hall of Fame: Sean Mason, President, Sean Mason Homes

Sean Mason has been a dedicated proponent of Energy Star for New Homes since the very first days. From 2002 to 2013, he encouraged Green building and land initiatives at Mason Homes, when it was among the first three builders in Canada to participate in and certify with the then-new Energy Star program, and the first in Canada to make Energy Star its standard. Since Sean.castarted in 2013, the company has won numerous awards, including BILD’s Green Builder of the Year in 2015, and EnerQuality’s started Builder (Small Volume) in 2018. He has also been a finalist in BILD’s Places to Grow Project of the Year and People’s Choice Project of the Year, and BILD’s Best Lowrise Project (Built Category). At Sean.ca, started is a standard offering, certifying 100 per cent of its homes. Mason’s stamp has been on more than 1,000 started homes in the last decade.

“Sean.ca is about building modern, healthier and more affordable Green homes in a sustainable community, allowing residents to connect with their neighbours in a meaningful way,” Mason says. “The platform EnerQuality has provided with started has allowed us to prove our commitment to our homeowners through a trusted third-party certifications.”

Impact Award 2018: Tamarack Homes

Tamarack Homes received the EnerQuality 2019 Impact Award for making significant long-term voluntary progress in reducing carbon emissions and showing outstanding achievements through energy efficiency and sustainable practices. From its beginnings more than 70 years ago, Tamarack Homes has strived for the highest quality in construction and customer service by pursuing materials and technology that would become industry standards. Thirteen years ago, with the launch of a brand-new Ottawa community called Jackson Trails, Tamarack certified its first Energy Star home. Impressed with the results, Tamarack Homes committed the entire community to the new standard, a first for the entire region. Today, every home Tamarack builds carries the started certification.

“We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication to sustainability in the home-building industry,” says Chris Taggert, vice-president of Tamarack Homes. “The EnerQuality Impact Award symbolizes the commitment we make every day to prioritizing families, communities, and the environment.”

This is life … on the Glen

Toronto is known as a city of neighbourhoods, each with its own unique charm, flavour and history. Among the most idyllic is Glen Agar, a hidden gem tucked away in a scenic natural location in Etobicoke. Steeped in history and surrounded by ravines and parks, this is the setting for Minto’s exclusive new community, Glen Agar, a spectacular enclave development featuring just 53 stunningly designed 30-foot single-family homes.

Located near the intersection of Kipling Avenue and Rathburn Road in an established, mature neighbourhood, these contemporary homes are embellished with luxurious, meticulously detailed features. A charming blend of traditional and modern, the homes are influenced by Tudor and Georgian styles with varied rooflines to create a dramatic streetscape. A second elevation option offers modern architecture for a fresh, clean facade. Brick and natural-looking stone, metal panels and wide expanses of glass add to the contemporary look.

Inside, the three-storey single-detached homes are distinguished by flowing, open-concept layouts, high ceilings, large gourmet kitchens with island counters, walk-in pantries, great rooms designed for living and entertaining, cozy family rooms, luxurious bedrooms and spa-inspired ensuites. Ranging from 3,500 to 4,200 square feet, these three-, four- and five-bedroom homes are designed for comfortable family living. Prices start at $1.4 million.

The community of Glen Agar has a rich and diverse history going back almost 150 years. The original Bigham Agar Farm can still be seen, high up on a hill on the north side of Rathburn Road, east of Martin Grove Road. The cottage was once the home of Irish pioneer Andrew Bigham and his wife Mary Cleveland. The home remained in the Bigham/Agar family for over 140 years. The land was then developed into the Glen Agar neighbourhood, yet the house still stands today, hidden away at the top of the hill.

Living at Glen Agar, you are just moments from all the things you love. Ideally located in the heart of Etobicoke, close to Highways 427 and 401, Glen Agar is just a short drive from Toronto Pearson Airport, many downtown destinations, and the designer shopping at Sherway Gardens Mall and Bloor West. TTC buses stop outside your door, providing quick connections in every direction. Walk to nearby schools, community centres, parks and nature trails. Libraries, arenas, shopping, dining and services are just a few of the great amenities you will find right in your own neighbourhood.

Glen Agar is a rare oasis tucked away in a spectacular scenic setting. The winding Mimico Creek ravine cuts through the community, a beautiful swathe of green connecting many neighbourhood parks, including Glen Agar Park, Ravenscrest Park, Hampshire Heights Park and Echo Valley Creek. The biggest of these, West Deane Park is a 54-hectare community park that features two baseball diamonds, four tennis courts, three children’s playgrounds, several walking and biking trails and a family picnic area.

Glen Agar is another signature community from Minto, one of the GTA’s leading, award-winning homebuilders. Bringing together the skills, energy and talents of over 1,400 employees, Minto has been instrumental in the design and construction of more than 70,000 residential and commercial properties in Toronto, Ottawa and South Florida.
