IDS Porcelanosa

The countdown is on! Only days remain till the annual Interior Design Show, Canada’s premier showcase of design taking place Jan. 17 to 20 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre but this year, in a new location in the South Building.

The show, now in its 21st year, celebrates the “Power of Design,” and is expanding its  offerings to include IDS Contract, a hyper-curated B2B trade-only exposition.

Here are some things to look forward to seeing at this year’s show, from some of the leading companies in the Canadian design market.

 

Caesarstone

IDS Caesarstone

Luxury quartz brand Caesarstone is collaborating with award-winning Dutch designer Marije Vogelzang for its 2019 Designer Program. This year, Caesarstone dives deep into the thoughtfulness of design, food production and consumption, and how it all translates into human connection – and the first installation will debut at IDS in Toronto!

The 2019 collaboration focuses on the thoughtfulness we should have in our kitchens, whether in meal preparation or conversation shared with guests. This will be represented through the journey of the seed. The installation will take visitors on a sensory experience through memories, human connection, happiness and the environment. The honeycomb-like exhibit will focus on generating stimulation from all sensory receptors as visitors travel their path eliminating external noise and disruption and imagining themselves as a seed and connecting back to the earth.

This collaboration will showcase Caesarstone surfaces through interactive activations and practical kitchen implications immersing visitors in the application of the Caesarstone surface.

 

Blanco

IDS Blanco

Blanco Canada will unveil its bold and interactive concept space designed specifically for IDS to launch its new Silgranit colour.

The latest addition to the Silgranit colour palette is a pure, fresh, soft mid-tone providing effortless design versatility. A clean, balanced colour profile and the right mix of red and blue undertones makes it an easy colour to design with in a variety of spaces with either warm or cool colour schemes.

 

Porcelanosa

IDS Porcelanosa

Luxury lifestyle brand Porcelanosa brings European design styles to the show, with a glimpse of its collection of bath and tile products.  From a wide selection of tiles and mosaics to  modern bathroom and kitchen cabinetry.

Porcelanosa will also be displaying its Icon and Vintage vanities and its Noa Tanzania Wine, from its Seedwood wood-look porcelain tile collection, and Lush White Polished tile from the XLIGHT collection.

 

Cosentino

IDS Cosentino

Cosentino will unveil its latest Silestone natural quartz line colour, Eternal Noir, and will display new colour additions from the ultra-compact Dekton Industrial Collection by renowned designer and architect Daniel Germani. The Dekton line showcases Cosentino’s mastery of the industrial aesthetic, putting rough, unexpected materials such as concrete back at the forefront of design.

Launching for the first time in Canada, the new Silestone Loft Series is a sophisticated range of colours offering a unique take on the industrial and architectural look of concrete. And making its Canadian debut at IDS is the Dekton Slim, an innovative take on the ultra-compact surface with an ultra-thin thickness of just four mm.

 

Jura

IDS Jura

Innovation, precision, quality, reliability, sustainability and service shape the DNA of Jura – the Swiss company that is the only brand in the world to focus solely on premium super-automatic specialty coffee machines. A dedicated team of traditional coffee machine artisans produce both premium domestic and commercial espresso machines, beautifully made with meticulous care and attention to detail.

Among the highlights to see at IDS are the Rocket Espresso – the finest espresso machine in the tradition of “Fatto a Mano,” which translates to “Made by Hand.”

 

ARD Outdoor

IDS ARD Outdoor

ARD Outdoor will introduce the sophisticated designs, and visual force of Vondom at IDS 2019 and open Toronto’s first and only Vondom gallery this spring within the ARD Outdoor showroom at Dufferin & Lawrence.

Designers, architects and discerning homeowners will appreciate the quality and design in a full range tables, chairs, armchairs, modular sofas, stools, bar counters, sun loungers, planters and lamps. ARD Outdoor’s Private Label furniture continues to evolve into new collections using teak, metal and woven materials at various price points to accommodate the unique needs of each project.

 

Beauti-Tone

Beauti-Tone Paint is launching is launching the New Simon Chang Trend Colour Collection 2019-20 and the new Coast to Coast Colour Collection at IDS, with a booth theme of Fresh Colours that will have a feel of a charming farmer’s market, encouraging all to shop local and buy fresh.

Sure to be a stand out at the show, the booth will feature a beautiful stationary bike, custom-painted to the colour of the year, Tropic of Conversation, with white tires and accents. Show visitors can hop on and take a ride, and as they pedal, the scenery changes and music plays by their own manpower.

 

Fleurco

Fleurco will showcase several new items at IDS, highlighted by the Latitude virtual grid door and the Halo medicine cabinets.

The Latitude Virtual Grid door uses a matte black silk screen in lieu of metal bars to make it a breeze to clean. Get the look with zero hassle! It prevents water leakage, is easy to install, is reversible left or right opening and has other practical features.

The new Halo medicine cabinet line features built in, warm white LED lighting, soft close doors and is available in multiple configurations.

Elite Window Fashions

Interior Design Show turning 21 this year

The Interior Design Show (IDS) is Canada’s premier showcase of new products, furniture, superstar designers and avant-garde concepts. This year, IDS Toronto celebrates the “Power of Design,” and is expanding its current offerings to include IDS Contract, a hyper-curated B2B trade-only exposition and conference focused on all verticals of design. IDS takes place Jan. 17 to 20, 2019 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“Now in its 21st year, IDS19 will focus on design across all verticals, including workplace, hospitality, retail, education, public space and government, and extend its trade-focused offering,” says Karen Kang, national director, IDS Canada.

IDS Contract

IDS Contract will bring an additional 100-plus exhibitors and a number of new features areas aimed at B2B trade professionals. With the addition of IDS Contract, IDS is positioning itself as a hybrid event that caters to both trade construction and design professionals and a design-savvy, affluent consumer audience.

New show floor

IDS19 will feature a new floor plan designed to be dynamic and encourage more interaction with exhibitors, increase dwell time at the event, and enhance the overall experience for attendees. IDS has selected FIRM Architecture and Design, an emerging Brooklyn-based practice, which focuses on the intersection of architecture, urbanism and art to redesign the IDS show floor.

The Backcountry Hut Company was founded as an idea for a simple and sustainable recreational structure that could be easily installed by groups of volunteers in remote locations. Developed as a modular cabin that can be delivered to your door as a flat pack kit of parts, the Backcountry Hut company will be launching its Great Lakes Cabin onsite at IDS19 in partnership with Leckie Studio Architecture + Design. Attendees will have the opportunity to expereicne well-designed, small-space living with access to the full cabin onsite, including full landscape design around the cabin by Flattery Design and skylights by Velux Technologies.

Design-driven Swiss watchmaker RADO unveiled its partnership with Canada’s premier design fair at IDS Vancouver 2018, as part of the brand’s global commitment to design. In 2019, the partnership will see RADO host an installation at IDS Toronto and run its famous RADO Star Prize competition in Canada for the first time. The installation will focus on “Design Inspired by Nature,” which is also the theme of the competition.

Monogram Canada brings fashion designer Zac Posen to IDS 2019

Sophisticated styling meets customized design in the latest collaboration between luxury appliance brand Monogram and celebrity fashion designer Zac Posen. A custom designed refrigeration panel created by the fashion icon will be unveiled at the opening night party in the elevated exhibit.

With intricate craftsmanship from the charcoal mirror finish to the fabric-inspired details, Posen’s door panel exudes sophistication. Inspired by how clothing wraps around the body and how different shapes move around the flat form of the panel, the distinctive design generate an inspiring standard of how unique the Monogram Column Refrigeration can be.

Designing for the human connection

IDS19 Guests of Honour

IDS is thrilled to welcome Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, the founding partners of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, as the Guests of Honour for IDS19. As an interdisciplinary practice based in Shanghai, they have won numerous international awards such as the Overall Winner of The PLAN Award (2018), EDIDA Designers of the Year (2017), ICONIC Awards’ Interior Designers of the Year (2017), Maison & Objet Asia Designers of The Year (2015) and Wallpaper* Designers of The Year (2014). In 2013, they were inducted into the U.S. Interior Design Hall of Fame.

Before starting their own practice in 2004, they both worked for several architecture firms in the US. Neri&Hu strongly believe in research as a design tool, their work draws from the dynamic interaction between experience, detail, material, form and light.

Lyndon and Rossana continue to teach and lecture around the world. They created Design Republic, an award-winning retail concept store in Shanghai that offers a unique collection of products created by the world’s best design talents and were appointed Creative Directors of Stellar Works in 2015.

CAESARSTONE X SNARKITECTURE:

Caesarstone’s project with New York-based collaborative practice Snarkitecture for their 2018 Designer Program will focus on the icon of the modern home: the kitchen island. The collaboration will present a realistic and practical interpretation of Caesarstone, one that looks at the functionality of the kitchen, while drawing from Snarkitecture’s signature blend of architecture and art. IDS18 attendees will get a preview of the first instalment of the collaboration before a large-scale version debuts at Milan Design Week later this year.


DESIGNBOOM MART:

designboom brings back its international design market, offering 30 creative professionals from all over the world introducing their new products to the Canadian market. A unique interactive platform or emerging and established designers to test their new ideas, visitors can purchase the self-produced or limited edition pieces directly from the designers. Expect to be drawn in by the innovative design of the booth, painted in designboom yellow.


THE FUTURE OF CANADIAN LIVING – TREEHOUSE

Multiple-time Interior Design Show Best Booth winner, AyA Kitchens and Baths, has confirmed that it will join forces with U31 Design and Cleaf by Weston Premium Woods for The Future of Canadian Living. Inspired by the culturally diverse makeup of Toronto, The Future of Canadian Living will feature a series of pod-like spaces to resemble a 15-foot high treehouse. MAKER:

Maker returns for its fourth instalment at IDS18, curated by designmilk. Maker features the work of artisanal North American design stars who produce their own work in small batches with limited distribution. This year’s Makers include 1925Workbench, Atelier Bussiere, Charuk & Ford, Christopher Solar Designs, Kastella, Kroft, Luxi Studioworks, Miles & May, Objects and Ideas, and PELLE.


STUDIO NORTH & PROTOTYPE:

Studio North and Prototype is the marketplace to showcase custom work and limited-edition collections to the design industry, media and a discerning design audience. Over 65 Canadian and international designers of the highest calibre present one-off and custom collections of furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surface design in a gallery-like setting. Studio North and Prototype participants are provided with the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a panel of international industry leaders and design experts.


THE CLOVER PAVILION BY ONTARIO WOOD:

The IDS18 ON Wood Display is the next step in an ongoing applied research into light-weight, hybrid spatial structures inspired by natural and biological systems. The Clover Pavilion is a grouping of partially enclosed floral display areas that feature tension-activated plywood petals. The project seeks to infuse wood design, one of Ontario’s enduring craft traditions, with experimental ideas and techniques from engineering and material systems theory. Technology and craft are developed together to produce a rich sequence of spaces that are responsive to visitors and highlight the varied Ontario Wood prototypes and artifacts on display.


CANADIAN BY NATURE: THE BEST IN NEW ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of IDS, this exhibition brings together some of the most talented designers and studios, whether practicing in Canada or abroad that represent the best of Canadian design today. Curated by Paul Makovsky, Vice President of Design of Metropolis magazine, the exhibition showcases the work of over 50 architecture and design studios–both emerging and established–to explore how considerations of sustainability, conscientious uses of materials and design philosophies can create projects and products that truly stand out, in terms of both their aesthetics and design.

IDS Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Star-Studded Speaker Line-up

Interior Design Show welcomes Michael Ford, Kathryn M. Ireland, Karim Rashid and Brian Gluckstein to 2018 event

Back to celebrate 20 years of success is North America’s most esteemed design fair, Interior Design Show (IDS), which will be taking over Toronto’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre from January 18-21, 2018. This year’s show will welcome returning favourites and new visionaries to the Caesarstone Stage during its three-day run, based around the concept of Future Forward design thinking.

IDS18 is thrilled to announce first-time conference speakers, the hip-hop architect, Michael Ford (United States) and renowned textile designer, Kathryn M. Ireland (United States) as the initial round of confirmed talent coming to Toronto. To pay homage to the event’s 20th anniversary, designers from IDS’ 1997 debut, Karim Rashid (Canada) and Brian Gluckstein (Canada), will join the lineup to share their design journeys.

MICHAEL FORD

Wisconsin-based designer, Michael Ford, has devoted his practice to blurring the lines between professional practice and academia. His work is an exploration of the cultural and sociological implications of architecture and urban planning, which was initially sparked by his graduate thesis “Hip Hop Inspired Architecture and Design” from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Combined with years of research, Michael has become one of America’s most sought-after lecturers, having given impressive presentations as the keynote at the 2017 American Institute of Architects National Conference on Architecture, and several appearances at various educational institutions. His most recent project, The Universal Hip Hop Museum, will see Michael’s programming and concept development come to life after a series of nationwide community design charrettes with prominent hip hop artists.

Michael Ford is the first speaker confirmed to take the stage on Trade Talk Friday.


KATHRYN M. IRELAND

The former actress, clothing designer and filmmaker, England-native, Kathryn M. Ireland also boasts the title of world-renowned interior and textile designer. Her lack of orthodoxy and love of colour come together to create a signature style known for being both comfortable and bohemian. As one of House Beautiful’s Top 100 Designers and as a member of ELLE Decor’s A-list Designers list, it’s no surprise that Kathryn counts Steve Martin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Mamet among her celebrity and tastemaker clientele.

Kathryn M. Ireland, the actress turned interior and textile designer, will take to the stage on January 20, 2018, to share her expertise and experience with the Globe Style Saturday crowd.


KARIM RASHID

With over 4,000 product designs and 300 awards to his name, Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Through his private design studio, Karim has created projects for Pepsi, Audi and, most recently, the Temptation Resort in Mexico. His resumé also boasts award-winning designs for Christofle, Veuve Clicquot and Alessi, democratic products for Umbra, Bobble and 3M, furniture for BoConcept and Nienkamper, lighting for Artemide, and high-tech products for Asus and Samsung.

Renowned product and interior designer Karim Rashid joins House & Home’s founder Lynda Reeves on January 21, 2018.


BRIAN GLUCKSTEIN

Brian Gluckstein, principal of GlucksteinDesign, is Canada’s national design treasure. The product and interior designer has propelled to the top of the industry with numerous awards for design excellence, including ARIDO Awards for Excellence in residential, commercial, corporate design, as well as numerous features in esteemed publications –Architectural Digest, ELLE Decor and House Beautiful. Brian works between Toronto, South Beach and New York, where he works on both private and public projects, such as the Four Seasons Hotel, Palm Beach. As a regular fixture on national television, Brian has become a staple within the North American design industry.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of IDS, one of the show’s first-ever speakers, Brian Gluckstein, will rejoin the speaker lineup on January 21, 2018.
