Rattan and cane

Au naturel with retro rattan and classic cane

Latest News

Au naturel with retro rattan and classic cane

Not just reserved for outdoor furniture anymore, rattan and cane are having a big moment inside the home too. How fitting after spending so much time indoors this spring in our collective effort to flatten the curve. With the summer season upon us, why not blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living even more? The truth is, this “au naturel” trend had already taken shape pre-pandemic. Generally, we are gravitating towards natural materials that bring in the soul and elements from nature into our abodes. Cane and rattan are natural materials, which both derive from the rattan palm, a vine from Southeast Asia. When the rattan palm is processed, it splits into two parts: cane is the thin core reed, used in webbed patterns seen in furniture applications, such as the back of a chair; the larger rattan reed material is used to weave wicker furniture and basketry.

The rising use of cane and rattan in decor is also due to the ever-growing popularity of grand-millennial style adopted by some millennials, AKA the new traditionalists. Think chintz upholstery, tassels, needlepoint and in this case, furniture made from materials once reserved for your grandmother’s screened porch.

Trending or not, cane and rattan pieces make a statement without adding visual weight in a space. You can bring in the vintage weaves with a light fixture, storage unit, chair or decor item. The major appeal for us is the cool coastal beach vibe rattan and cane evoke, and who doesn’t want to add some sweet summertime favourites inside our homes all year long?

How to create a dependable laundry room

How to create a dependable laundry room

Latest News

How to create a dependable laundry room

As a mom, a lot of people depend on us. I recently worked with Alison, a firefighter and mom of five-year-old Gwen, who I had the pleasure of overhauling her laundry room. At work, people depend on Alison to help save lives, and at home, her family depends on her for countless things — so creating systems and spaces that allow her to reliably get the job done was the name of the game in this space.

First things first

No laundry room is complete without a washer and dryer. For this space, I chose Maytag’s Front Load Extra Power Washer and Dryer, which have an extra power feature. For the washer, the extra power button fights stains that dissolve best in hot water and in cold — all in one load. For the dryer, the extra power button helps get thick fabrics drier the first time by adding extra time to the cycle.

Tons of storage

Alison’s home is on the smaller size, so every single square inch of this space needed to count. I went with taller-than-average uppers from Ikea in a high-gloss navy blue for a look that is both modern and functional, allowing Alison to store detergent, cleaning supplies, towels and other necessities in arm’s reach. We also incorporated storage on the other side of the room with multiple drawers, and decorative shelving. This space doubles as a desk for Alison’s young daughter when not needed for folding!

Tons of folding space

Whether you are a Netflix-and-fold kind of person or not, I think a dependable laundry space needs to have ample counter space. In this space, I used butcher-block counters to provide a warm, textural contrast against the blue cabinetry and marble wallpapered walls that I found at https://anewall.com/. Installing a counter over a front-load washer and dryer is always a must for me as it provides a durable surface and creates a more built-in look to your appliances.

Space for hanging

I think one of the most overlooked functions of a laundry room is space for hanging clothing that needs to air-dry. Whether you use a folding wire contraption that allows clothing to lay flat, a rope that allows you to hang clothing, or hooks like I did right here, you definitely need to plan for this element so you can have the option for air-drying clothing.

Make it beautiful

I am a big believer that when a space is beautiful, we are so happy to be there, and this makes us super productive. So we utilized all KINDS of strategies to make this space just gorgeous. We wrapped a marble wallpaper along all the walls, we added gorgeous crown moulding, we added all kinds of teal accents that we found at Home Sense and just had so much fun with art, beautiful towels, and greenery.

TREND WATCH: from Venice, with Love

by Silvana Longo

Originating in Italy’s Veneto area over 500 years ago, terrazzo is a composite material of marble chippings set into cement and polished to a super smooth finish. Created as a way to reuse the scrapped rock, this sustainable, speckled mosaic was traditionally used as flooring in Venetian palaces.

It had a moment in the sun in the ’70s but this year, building on the popularity of marble over the last few years, terrazzo offers a more colourful, more playful alternative. And its popularity in the 21st century soars beyond the floor and walls with many decor items popping up inspired by the abstract pattern. It brings texture and interest to fabrics and wallpapers, and these terrazzo-inspired items add a chic Italian vibe to your decor.

Lighting up our summer!

Lighting up our summer!

Latest News

Lighting up our summer!

by Linda Mazur

Proper illumination is vital for obvious reasons.

The warm weather has finally arrived and many of us will be working on outdoor living spaces for our clients. Creating a beautiful, well-curated backyard oasis, with lush gardens can be an exciting project. However, an outdoor space cannot be truly complete without proper lighting. It not only adds value to the home, it can bring great enjoyment and value to life.

Proper illumination is vital for obvious reasons such as safety and ease of mobility. Whether it’s an entryway, pathway lighting, recessed deck lighting, a security light or beautiful sconces outside doorways, we require basic lighting to assist us in the dark. However, good outdoor lighting also carries an aesthetic value.

When planned properly, exterior entryway lights can highlight architecture features, whether at the front or rear of the home. As we know, there are multitudes of styles and lighting options available from modern to traditional to period pieces — wall sconces to pendant lighting. Decide what may be the most complementary to enhance the exterior of your home. Recessed soffit lights may be another option to consider and are a great way to “wall-wash” the house, casting a warm glow and highlighting the architectural details.

Deck lighting and pathway lighting not only improves the aesthetics of your outdoor space, it obviously also enables us to move freely and safely in the dark. When creating pathway lighting remember to keep your lights well balanced and staggered to avoid the “landing strip” effect that we so often see. When lighting a staircase, I’m often asked by clients how many lights are enough? For a relatively narrow staircase, a single step light centred in each riser may be sufficient, for wider steps you may feel that you require a series of lights along each riser, or perhaps they can be positioned in the stringers.

Accent lighting is also important when planning an outdoor project. Consider adding lighting to garden beds, up lighting trees, architectural features like pergolas, arbours or gazebos, or perhaps a wall or water feature. And, let’s not forget that fire is a great feature for the outdoors. Whether it’s an actual formal fireplace or simply one of the various other options such as columns, bowls, pits, lanterns or tables, the addition of fire to your space is a wonderful feature to cozy up and enjoy the summer evening outdoors.

When planning and designing your outdoor living spaces, keep in mind that the drive to Smart Home automation is not lost outdoors. Consider Control4 for your lighting, sound, water features, security and more, to enhance your space with ease, as well as maintain usage control.

Our time outdoors in the summer is so short-lived; however, with the addition of proper lighting you can extend and enhance your stay to really soak in the relaxation and pleasures that the summer months have to offer.

TREND WATCH: Electric Jungle

by Silvana Longo

You may have noticed wild animals and tropical themes dominating in decor lately, but this isn’t just a regular jungle motif adding a tropical vibe to your interiors. This summer, the Electric Jungle trend has emerged with shapes and objects of the natural world represented in an unnatural way. Taken out of their usual context and recoloured, at times in an Andy Warhol-ish, neon kind of way, these primal elements electrify any decor with incredible patterns, bold colours and lots of neon lighting. Step into this jungle-in-stereo look and add a wild spark of Pop Art to a space, inside and out.
