Tis the season to cosy up to a fire

The weather is cold and thoughts of cosying up by the fireplace are becoming increasingly enticing. Fireplaces have a certain appeal in our homes, and definitely enhance the look as well as the feel of any room; somehow they are the perfect complement to any decor style. If you reside in a house, adding a fireplace to your home can be a relatively simple process; however, condo-dwellers may encounter a few challenges from space to accessibility, ventilation to finding an electric fireplace that “looks like a real fire.”

Often, condos and lofts are outfitted with gas, or even wood-burning fireplaces. If your home is not this fortunate, however, all is not lost. There are many different possibilities that will still give you the beautiful ambiance a fireplace creates while facilitating any structural or venting limitations you may be facing.

The progression in the design and functionality of electric fireplaces are vast since they first entered the market. Today, electric fireplaces can boast designs that use revolutionary ultrasonic technology to create a life-like flame as well as smoke effects simulating a real wood-burning fire. Advancements in technology have also created a three-dimensional flame, which is a fabulous and realistic design for an electric fireplace. We also have the “open flame” electric fireplace. This is a great design should you want to incorporate a more traditional looking mantel and add a lovely fireplace screen to enhance the look, or incorporate an “open-flame” design into a more modern setting.

We have recently seen the introduction of two-sided electric fireplaces, which undoubtedly can conjure up much by way of design inspiration when planning a renovation. When I’m designing spaces that require an electric fireplace, one of my favourite go-to manufacturers is Dimplex. They have been able to create unparalleled flame technology that is designed to suit any style or decor; and have a large selection of fireplaces to suit a variety of applications.

Another energy-efficient and “eco-smart” option in fireplaces would be ethanol burners.

Ethanol burners do not require a chimney or a flue, there are no restrictive gas connections which means they can almost be installed just about anywhere, providing you with endless design possibilities for your home.

Choosing the right design and function for your fireplace is key to maximizing the usage and enjoyment of your investment. As space can sometimes be limited, the addition of a fireplace to your condo should be well planned. If properly designed, you may find that the fireplace feature can often become a multi-functional element, possibly serving as storage space as well as beautifying your home. With many of the options available today, you may find that incorporating your fireplace into a media console, or a built-in wall unit can facilitate the extra storage space you may need.

Today we are fortunate to have a multitude of fireplace options and functionalities available to us that no longer restrict condodwellers from enjoying the seasonal charms and comforts of a roaring fire. Whether you prefer the traditional, formal mantel or whether your style beckons a more contemporary approach to the design of your fireplace, you undoubtedly will have a wide selection of options and design inspo to choose from. With the season changing, and the colder days among us, why not create an inviting, relaxed space to enjoy?

Savannah Heating Products releases two new fireplace series under its Genesis label

Savannah fireplaces

In 2016, Savannah challenged its fireplace designers to think outside the box.

The challenge: Develop an affordable fireplace that eliminates the need for safety screens, doesn’t utilize heat dumps or vents in the wall, and facilitates placement of a TV above the fireplace at a proper viewing height.

The result is two new series of fireplaces under the Genesis Line of warm touch, double-glass front fireplaces.

The Galaxy series 38-, 48- and 58-in. units offer a bay style three sided panorama view while the Infinity series offer a 40-, 50- and 60-in. fireplace in a contemporary linear style.

The Genesis line of fireplaces utilizes similar design features across all models. The Heat Shield technology enables a warm touch, no post, double glass front replace the traditional safety screen. This provides a clear unobstructed view to the rich bold Savannah flame in a stunning contemporary look.

Utilizing 42 active heat settings, no heat dumps or wall vents are required. RTC technology provides warmth to the room while accommodating sensible placement of a television over the fireplaces.

As with all Savannah’s fireplaces the Genesis series focuses on making sure units are contractor friendly by being easy to install and service while delivering exceptional value to the homeowner.

DESIGN: All Fired Up!

We all are aware that fireplaces are a great design feature in any space. They visually enhance the aesthetic of a room and create a warm and cozy environment in the colder months. Reno Expert: Don’t Move, Improve

by Jim Caruk

If the real estate market has you feeling jittery about moving, why not focus your attention on the home you already own

After more than a decade of almost non-stop rising home prices in Toronto and the surrounding suburbs, things seem to have finally started to taper off. Still, with the average home price in Toronto peaking somewhere north of $1-million, with realtor fees, land transfer taxes (provincial and municipal if you buy within the city limits), lawyers’ fees, and the various other closing costs, you could quite easily spend $100,000 or more just to swap your old house for a new one, without doing any renovations. Why not put that money into your current house and create the home you’ve always dreamed of?

FAVOURITE FAB UPGRADES

Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most popular rooms people focus on when upgrading their homes. Whether it’s a fully functional chef’s kitchen with high-end appliances and plenty of countertop workspace, or a spa-like master bathroom complete with soaker tub and a bevy of spray jets in the shower, these projects can convert an ordinary home into the extraordinary.

A MAN CAVE FOR ALL SEASONS

I wouldn’t be doing my duty to all the men out there if I didn’t mention the coveted “man cave.” Whether the focus is on a bar, a pool table, or a big-screen TV on which to watch the game, many a man has appeased his mid-life crisis by ordering up a place of his own where he can hang with his buddies. But if such an upgrade seems to be a tad lopsided, another more inclusive option is to create or remodel the family room into a home entertainment hub.

OUTWARD BOUND

Some people would rather focus on the great outdoors. Obviously, now isn’t a good time to start building a new deck or installing a pool, but it is a great time to line up a contractor and make some decisions on design and materials so work can get started as soon as the snow is gone.

A NICE DIP INTO THE EQUITY POOL

Of course, these luxury upgrades come at a cost. But even with home prices on a bit of a slide right now, if you’ve been in your house for more than a couple years, it’s almost certainly increased in value. You can access that “virtual” cash by taking out a home equity line of credit.

STAY PUT IN STYLE

So save yourself the stress and cost of looking elsewhere for a dream home. That perfect space is possible right where you currently reside, with the added bonus of not purging your possessions and packing your life up into boxes.

Design: Turning Up The Heat

by Linda Mazur

With the change in seasons fast approaching, our desire to create a warm, comfy layered look in our homes is only natural.

We look to incorporate the textures and colours of accessories like faux fur throw blankets, beautiful lush velvety cushions and some of the wonderful richly coloured accent pieces we are seeing in stores today. But, have you considered adding a fireplace as part of your room “makeover”?

A fireplace is a great focal point in any room and the perfect starting point if you’re looking to build a relaxing room that’s charming and inviting on those cold winter days. It can instantly transform your space by adding not only design interest, but also comfort …creating a cozy atmosphere. There’s much to consider when deciding on a fireplace, from the location to the size of the room, from the design aspect to the requirement restrictions. Are you looking for a more traditional mantle look, or perhaps a sleek modern approach is more your style?

Fireplaces today are not just for house-dwellers, if you reside in a condo all is not lost. You too can enjoy the beauty and comfort of the season by installing an electric fireplace in your home. Electric fireplaces have come a long way in their design since they first appeared on the market, and have become a viable alternative to those that are unable to install a gas unit. There are many different styles of electric units available, from a traditional log set with mantle, to beautiful ice crystal units, river rock to the “true to life” organic look of a natural wood burning fire of the Opti-Myst units created by Dimplex (Dimplex.com). As a designer, I’m a big fan of these Opti- Myst electric fireplace units. Fireplaces are a great design feature, and these units offer the look and feel of a wood burning fire by using revolutionary ultrasonic technology to create the most realistic, life-like flame and water vapors to create smoke effects; an aesthetically pleasing visual display that is second to none.

Ethanol fireplace units are also a great option for condo dwellers. Ethanol units are easy to install and available in so many different styles and sizes, from full fireplaces to table top units, to columns that are great for the outdoors and can be incorporated in to your balcony design. Ethanol fuel is all-natural and made from renewable resources, a highly efficient heating solution for your home.

Though electric fireplaces are far simpler to purchase and install than gas, there still are so many options and possibilities that you really should do your homework to decide on the best for your home. Fireplace units can be free-standing or built-in, plug-in or hard-wired, emanate heat or simply be a visual accent (KastleFireplace.ca). I like to turn to a knowledgeable company like Kastle Fireplace to assist in purchasing the most suitable unit when designing for my clients.

With winter fast approaching get inspired by all the colour, texture and beautiful accessories you’re seeing to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home. A fireplace could be the best decor addition of all this season.
