Outdoor time has been made a priority in all aspects of this community, with large lots providing ample yard space, charming, nature-infused neighbourhoods, and a sprawling community park.

A convenient commute to Toronto

Only a short drive east of Toronto, Whitby has become Durham Region’s most sought-after destination for active young families. It is a picturesque locale boasting more than 125 parks, 950 acres of active parkland, thousands of acres of lush open space and beaches, plus 60 km of trails, such as the renowned Ash Creek and Heber Down Conservation area. Whitby is also home to Canada’s largest municipally owned recreation facility, and a family-friendly entertainment centre loaded with everything from popular restaurants to a massive movie theatre, and even an indoor skydiving facility.

Not only will Great Gulf Whitby Meadows place homeowners at the bustling heart of the city, but this vibrant new community is only minutes away from the 401, 407, 412, and GO Transit. This makes for an easy, straight-forward commute west to downtown Toronto.

A home for your generation and the next

Great Gulf has a longstanding history in the Whitby area, and its commitment to building high-quality homes not only takes this generation of homebuyers into consideration, but subsequent generations as well.

The homes of Great Gulf Whitby Meadows are being planned with smarter construction, better materials and higher standards intended to benefit families and the environment. Both townhomes and singles will be Energy Star certified to ensure a higher level of energy savings and environmental sustainability. This means elevated standards in heating and cooling, insulation, electrical and plumbing, air quality and energy efficiency. The townhomes and singles will also be built with the science of H+me Technology, a state-of-the-art synergistic process where homes are virtually constructed to ensure precision before anything is physically built. Homes are pre-assembled in a dedicated facility allowing them to be built at a fraction of the time it takes traditionally. The H+me Technology’s advanced process ensures tighter gaps and fewer seams aiding to reduce energy consumption and material waste during construction by up to 70 per cent.

Spacious towns and singles, family-focused neighbourhoods, easy commuting, and all for the best price in the GTA. It sounds like Great Gulf Whitby Meadows is the answer this generation of new homebuyers has been searching for. The question is, what are you waiting for?

EQ Awards group photo

Ontario’s most Green home builders and suppliers were honoured Feb. 28 at the 2018 EQ Awards. More than 250 guests, including Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, celebrated 20 years of EnerQuality along with the accomplishments of its leaders with the official announcement of the award winners.

“It speaks volumes to see how the longevity of EnerQuality and our certifications like Energy Star have continued to remain relevant and grow in impact over the years,” say Corey McBurney, president of EnerQuality. “The 2018 EQ Awards allowed the industry to celebrate where we have come from and spotlight the pioneers who are joining forces to carve a new path for the future with programs such as our Energy Star Multifamily Highrise certification.”

“The People’s Choice Award was an amazing new addition to the Awards, allowing us to involve the greater community in both recognizing and selecting the winner,” adds Shannon Bertuzzi, vice-president of market development at EnerQuality. “Our certifications are voluntary investments by our builders. EnerQuality is committed to ensuring the greater public is aware of the investment these builders are making for the sustainability of these communities.”

2018 Hall of Fame: Sean Mason, President, Sean Mason Homes

Sean Mason has been a dedicated proponent of Energy Star for New Homes since the very first days. From 2002 to 2013, he encouraged Green building and land initiatives at Mason Homes, when it was among the first three builders in Canada to participate in and certify with the then-new Energy Star program, and the first in Canada to make Energy Star its standard. Since Sean.castarted in 2013, the company has won numerous awards, including BILD’s Green Builder of the Year in 2015, and EnerQuality’s started Builder (Small Volume) in 2018. He has also been a finalist in BILD’s Places to Grow Project of the Year and People’s Choice Project of the Year, and BILD’s Best Lowrise Project (Built Category). At Sean.ca, started is a standard offering, certifying 100 per cent of its homes. Mason’s stamp has been on more than 1,000 started homes in the last decade.

“Sean.ca is about building modern, healthier and more affordable Green homes in a sustainable community, allowing residents to connect with their neighbours in a meaningful way,” Mason says. “The platform EnerQuality has provided with started has allowed us to prove our commitment to our homeowners through a trusted third-party certifications.”

Impact Award 2018: Tamarack Homes

Tamarack Homes received the EnerQuality 2019 Impact Award for making significant long-term voluntary progress in reducing carbon emissions and showing outstanding achievements through energy efficiency and sustainable practices. From its beginnings more than 70 years ago, Tamarack Homes has strived for the highest quality in construction and customer service by pursuing materials and technology that would become industry standards. Thirteen years ago, with the launch of a brand-new Ottawa community called Jackson Trails, Tamarack certified its first Energy Star home. Impressed with the results, Tamarack Homes committed the entire community to the new standard, a first for the entire region. Today, every home Tamarack builds carries the started certification.

“We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication to sustainability in the home-building industry,” says Chris Taggert, vice-president of Tamarack Homes. “The EnerQuality Impact Award symbolizes the commitment we make every day to prioritizing families, communities, and the environment.”

Builders constantly improve energy efficiency of new homes

Latest News

Builders constantly improve energy efficiency of new homes

Energy efficiency is a concern for homeowners, for the obvious reason of saving money on utility bills, but also the impact on the environment. In the home building industry, the Ontario Building Code (OBC) is updated every few years, often resulting in increasing energy efficiency standards in new homes.

It is important, as an industry, to achieve and exceed OBC requirements to create homes with increased sustainability. Participating in voluntary third-party rating systems, such as Energy Star and LEED, is one way builders improve energy efficiency. In addition, numerous builders create their own specific programs to ensure their homes are better built than the OBC.

Undertaking their own research and reviewing new technologies and materials that are cost and time saving, as well as reducing environmental impact, is an ongoing process for residential builders. It is important to keep an open mind when presented with new products while ensuring they are effective. This often requires extensive testing.

For example, Geranium is testing a new liquid tar material to seal flat roofs. The substance is poured into place becoming a puncture-resistant rubber membrane that seals roof edges and penetrations on the exterior more effectively against inclement weather. It is a durable product, requiring less maintenance and repair and decreases drafts, thereby contributing to overall energy saving.

HOME ENERGY RATING

Many builders devote time and energy to enhance their construction techniques to make sure homes are well sealed, incorporate good air flow and have minimal air leakage. These efforts are being acknowledged through industry recognition. The Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD), for example, includes a Green Home Builder of the Year category in its annual awards. The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) holds a Cross Border Builder Challenge and gives awards for the lowest Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score. The lower the score, the better it is for the environment. Recently, Geranium proudly received the award for the lowest score (HERS 42) in the Canadian midproduction category for a home in our Whitchurch-Stouffville Bloomington Woods community.

There are different ways builders may address energy efficiency. Other examples include using raised heel trusses providing consistent thickness and more space for attic insulation, Tyvek Air Barrier (a home wrap that performs as a superior air barrier), sprayed-in-place expandable foam insulation and Energy Star qualified windows, all of which Geranium uses. To inform people of the benefits of how we build and the process behind it, we’ve created an online video and hold events such as Hard Hat Tours led by the construction team in a home being built prior to drywall installation to help educate our homeowners on the building process.

In the GTA, the push to design more functional smaller spaces is encouraging lowrise builders to create higher density housing forms, and as a result, seek out innovative products. For example, installing a tankless water heater in combination with an air handler for space heating means the equipment takes up less valuable space while improving energy efficiency; a benefit to the homeowner.

Ontario’s builders are focused on offering top-quality energy-efficient homes that will take owners into the future in comfort and with confidence.

Louie Morizio is senior vice-president, construction, housing division for Geranium and a director of RESCON. Since 1977, Geranium has built more than 8,000 homes in fine neighbourhoods and communities throughout Ontario. Geranium.com
