HOME FINDS: TREND WATCH: Shades of Summer
by Silvana Longo
Nothing sparks design inspiration as much as the sights and colours we soak in during our international travels. They awaken our senses and breathe new life into our design taste buds. It is no wonder we want to somehow recreate the stimulating visuals we experienced abroad into our interiors upon our return.

TERRACOTTA is making a major comeback.Like an old friend you haven’t seen in decades (since the ’90s to be exact) Much of our modern-day stresses are due to digital overload; more than ever, the remedy is to embrace Mother Nature’s colours and raw materials in our homes. Nothing does that better than Terracotta—a rich, warm and ancient material—the colour is also enjoying a resurgence as we get back to basics. The warm, earthy, organic tone we are seeing this time is lighter than before—less brick, more pink—a fusion of previous it-colours, blush pink and copper. The dusky pink echoes architecture from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Mexico. |

Not that 70’s YELLOWThe nature and global-inspired theme continues with our second colour pick in the spotlight. In fashion, varying shades of yellow pervaded the Spring/Summer ’18 collections… in interiors though, it isn’t that intimidatingly bright yellow, instead it is an earthy, golden ochre, some call mustard, a shade which works well with the warmer colour palette that we are gravitating to this year. In an earth-toned space, mustard yellow adds the final touch to lighten the mood. Although it pairs well with just about any colour scheme, mixing ochre with navy will create a rich and sophisticated look. HISTORY LESSON: A natural material, Ochre is a natural clay and was the most commonly used pigment for painting walls in the ancient Mediterranean world. |

We end this trio of trend colours with what is proverbially known as the cherry on top…My Preferred Pastel
PISTACHIOKnown as the “green gold” that grows at the feet of Etna, its shell contains the delicate flavour and aroma of Sicily, the island of sea and sun. Besides the fact that it is my absolute favourite gelato flavour (and pretty much anything made with pistachios), the pretty pastels of sorbet are a big trend in interiors this year. This particular hue brings freshness and energy to a room as well as inspring optimism and a festive mood. Much like that feeling you get when you indulge in your favourite ice cream. |
