Smart Spend: Custom Kitchen Mapping

Budget-savvy Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault pulls off a custom kitchen mapping out where to save and where to splurge

• Photography By Larry Arnal

rd_dj19_makeover_1

I’ve always believed that great style doesn’t need to come with a hefty price tag. In fact, almost all my projects hinge on the idea that the most important ingredient in any well-designed space is creativity, NOT money!

Before

Having said that, I recently completed my very own dream kitchen makeover that required an equal serving of creativity AND money to complete. My husband and I had planned and saved for years to be able to tackle a complete “no-compromise” overhaul, and contrary to my frugal DIY ways, the kitchen was a MAJOR investment that not only completely changed the overall appearance, but also the function of the space.

After

Although the majority of the renovation fell into the category of “custom,” it’s important to note that “custom” should not be synonymous with expensive. There were countless ways that we saved during our reno, which allowed us to splurge on a few extra luxuries. It proves that you can absolutely create a customized space with a modest budget…you just need to be a little more CREATIVE with the dollars you have!

Here’s where to save, and where to splurge to create a compromise-free custom kitchen:

Save

DEMO FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Many homeowners plan to save by attempting to do the demo of their old kitchen themselves, but skip swinging the sledgehammer and instead, call your local Habitat for Humanity to schedule a crew to do the deconstruction for you… for FREE! Not only will they remove your existing cabinets and countertop, but they’ll do it with extreme care, and then transport it to a local ReStore where it will be sold to support the amazing work that Habitat does in the community. The added benefit is that you also get a tax receipt for the donation and you save the items from ending up in a landfill. Now, that’s a lot of SAVINGS!

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CABINETRY COLOUR

Cabinetry typically takes up the most visual space in a kitchen, and the colour and finish immediately dictate the room’s overall mood and style. In the case of most custom kitchens, two-toned painted cabinets don’t often come at an added expense, but create a truly unique and customized look. I wanted our kitchen to feel light and bright, but I also wanted to add some personality with colour, so we opted to add a splash of navy on the lowers. The best thing about painted surfaces is that if (and when) you tire of the two-toned look down the road, it’s easy to update them with a fresh coat of paint.

Now, if painting cabinetry sounds like a daunting task, consider a DIY-friendly kit called Cabinet Transformations by Rustoleum—it has everything you need to easily and affordably tackle a cabinet makeover in just a weekend. The kit even contains a seemingly miracle product called “De-glosser,” which micro-etches the surface so you don’t have to sand before painting—and that will save you tons of time along with money.

The lower cabinet colour was matched to Benjamin Moore’s Deep Secret, and the upper cabinets were Steam. Both were mixed in a commercial lacquer, so the colours read slightly differently.

UPDATE YOUR EXISTING HARDWARE FINISH

Pewter today…bronze tomorrow! Colour trends seem to change so quickly these days, and that includes trends in metal finishes. If your budget is limited, but you’re craving a trendy hardware update, consider buying a can of metal spray paint to update ALL of your existing handles and knobs instead of replacing each one. It may seem like such a small change, but hardware is like the jewelry of the space, and I promise that updating it will make a big overall difference.

Deep Secret
Steam

SPLURGE

FAUCET SWAP

A faucet often becomes a focal point accessory in a kitchen, and with your entire reno budget considered, why skimp on spending an additional $100 or so on a less expensive faucet when that small amount of extra money (in the grand scheme of things) can make it a showpiece and elevate the entire look of the space? I ditched our original builder-grade faucet in our old kitchen and upgraded to the Delta Trinsic with Touch2o technology. It’s become one of those small luxuries in the space that even guests take notice of and compliment.

UPGRADE INTERIOR FIXTURES

As much as you want your new kitchen to look amazing, you also want to make sure it functions really well. Planning for custom interior fixtures, like Magic Corners and utensil dividers, will add a bit more to your budget but will make keeping your drawers and cupboards organized so much easier. Also, consider storage solutions for small appliances that you don’t use often and create a dedicated area in your design to stash them away. Having something like a double-deep drawer to stash mixers and blenders or a space-saving pull-out pantry will help cut the clutter from your counter.

COMPROMISE-FREE COUNTERS

The one item at the very top of my kitchen reno wish list was quartz counters. After years of living with scratched and stained laminate, I was excited to invest in a non-porous surface that would stand up to everything from tomato sauce spills to coffee drips. Not only is quartz stain-resistant, but the man-made material is virtually impervious to bacteria, and is incredibly durable against scratches and chips from pots and pans. Quartz is an investment, but it’s definitely a worthwhile one for any kitchen.

A self-proclaimed DIY ninja, Leigh-Ann believes that great design has little to do with how much money you spend, but rather how creative you can be with your budget. As an expert on CityTV’s Cityline, Leigh-Ann embraces every opportunity to spark creativity and instill confidence in others who strive to “DO IT YOURSELF.” For more information, visit huelala.com @leighannallaire

Creating a modern basement

Latest News

Creating a modern basement

In our new home, we had a lot to do to create a modern playroom and functional home office. The result is amazing – and I hope it can inspire you too!

I love colour, but I wanted to try something different and edgy in my basement. Creating this space has shown me the power of a minimal palette of black and white. The way to keep things interesting is to vary your patterns but all within the black and white palette. Think stripes, geometric prints, painterly lines and high contrast cabinetry.

Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is my secret weapon in playrooms. Putting in floor-to-ceiling cabinetry allows you to hide all the visual clutter and chaos that comes with toys, books, cards and all that fun stuff behind beautiful, closed storage. You literally get to close the door on visual clutter and it is a big reason why I love spending time in this room.

I worked with Tailored Living on this space. They make it so convenient for you to achieve organization and order by bringing all the samples to you during an in-home consultation, taking all the required measurements, working with you on a 3D design, installing the cabinets quickly and simply and really just getting you where you need to go in regards to your organizational goals. With franchises across the US and Canada, there’s a solution waiting for you.

I wanted high contrast in the cabinetry so I chose white modern shaker cabinets on the perimeter of the room, and dark drawer fronts on this generous island that allows my kids ample room to spread out and get messy. The combination of drawers and tall cabinets is an important strategy — the tall upper cabinets are great for books and board games, the deeper lower cabinets are fabulous for large bins for toys and and shallow drawers are great for art supplies, paper, Shopkins and Lego. We used laminate for its durability as well as its accessible price point. To add a bit of sparkle to the space, I added pulls by Shayne Fox Hardware. I love the handmade, rustic element these bring to this cabinetry.

I chose to put a sink in this space as it’s so practical with my seven little kids. In keeping with my monochromatic palette, I chose Delta’s new black matte Esque faucet with its sleek pull-down design and modern innovations like the ShieldSpray technology that dispenses water in an unique pattern to clean up dirty dishes while containing mess and splatter.

And I kept the matte black going with the wall paint colour which makes me so happy. I don’t think I would have been as bold to do this if I did not have so much natural light in this space, but I’m so happy with how this Wrought Iron colour by Benjamin Moore turned out. And whenever I use dark shades, I like using it in a matte finish. It’s rich and lush and I love its modern look.

The large-scale artwork might be my favourite element in my playroom. We had individual portraits of our children blown up to fit these inexpensive frames. We hung them around our TV about three inches apart and it creates a graphic element that makes me smile every time I enter the room. Keeping things black and white helps the TV to not feel like a major focal point of the room, and instead sort of blend in to the composition.

Sometimes mom and dad need a moment, but still need to keep an eye on the little ones, so we created a home office space. We actually put a wall up ourselves, including these beautiful doors from Metrie, which I painted blue. I love how the clear glass gives us the option to still peek in and see what is going on with our children.

We put the electric fireplace/media unit by Dimplex and I just love how it creates instant cozy with the press of a button. You can put an electric fireplace virtually anywhere you can run the correct power, and the results are fast, stylish, cozy and so comfortable. There is something about a fireplace that promotes instant comfort and relaxation at home, don’t you think? And that’s what a modern basement should be about.

Tips for kitchen bliss

Latest News

Tips for kitchen bliss

I recently completed a tough kitchen makeover — maybe the toughest yet as it was my own personal space. Follow my tips below on how to create a space you will truly love.

I chose my appliances first. I knew I wanted something completely different and when I saw the new Fingerprint Resistant Sunset Bronze collection from Whirlpool, I made this my jumping off point. It’s the crème-de-la-crème of this kitchen. With a brushed satin finish and rose gold undertones, this fingerprint resistant suite really sets off this space.

For the walls I decided to stay true to my one true paint love – Jojo whitewash PF17 from Para. I find staying with the same colour in an open concept gives the space a cohesive and continual look.

Next, I worked with DV Kitchen and Bath to find the right cabinets for a clean, streamlined look. I decided on a flat-panel front but in trendy gloss white; the gloss helps to bounce light and creates the illusion of a larger space. Plus these cabinets are super easy to wipe down, keeping that new look and feel.

To keep the cabinets streamlined, I selected Grass soft-close hardware from their Nova Pro Scala collection. Grass is the hidden gem in any cabinet system – my cabinets push closed silently and open with a gentle touch.

For the countertop I wanted a waterfall island. I chose Caesarstone’s Calacatta Nuvo for both the island, counters and backsplash. This countertop is stunning and durable and is the centre of attention in the kitchen. Choosing a primarily white countertop with white cabinets creates the illusion of a much larger space. Don’t be afraid to have your countertops the same colour as your cabinets. And make sure you have them installed properly. I too often find clients skimp on the most important part of the kitchen renovation, which is the installation. I turned to the folks at Renovare Marble and Granite, who installed my counters with complete professionalism and perfection and also create a complete custom backsplash for my space that is a serious showstopper.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a hundred times: the faucet is the gem in the kitchen. I went with the Delta Trinsic single-handle pulldown in Champagne Bronze. The design is simply smart and elegant, with an integrated pulldown wand. Plus, the colour is a modern take on gold that pairs well with my stainless steel sink and my appliances.

I went a bit trendy with the herringbone style floor, but I used a classic and timeless marble tile to balance the trendiness. The result is amazing and ties the cupboards, countertops, closet and paint all together. This tile came from Creek Side Tile, which has a vast selection.

In my house, the HVAC piping went up through one of the kitchen walls I wanted to remove, making a full open-concept impossible. Originally I was bummed about having to keep the piping there, requiring a closet to hide it in. I now love this closet. It is a fun architectural focal point, where I was able to add display shelves and texture. To create a perfect finish and get a properly sized door for this closet, I used Metrie’s Trude Craft Collection.

Onto the stunning finishing touches. The dishware and stools were found on Wayfair Canada. They have an extensive collection of affordable options and offer free shipping. These stools are elegant, simple and have brass accents that I could not do without.

The blinds are TriLight and offer a unique combination of sheer pleated shade on the top and a honeycomb shade on the bottom. It’s like having three looks in one – all sheer, all privacy or half and half. This design is exclusive to Budget Blinds. In my kitchen I choose to go with Artcraft for lights with brass stems, accents and posts. They fit perfectly with the appliances, faucet and the accent pieces I choose – once again, tying the entire space together.

A bold new colour in stainless

A bold new colour in stainless

Delta Faucet Canada recently introduced a new black stainless finish for the kitchen.

When it comes to kitchen design, consumers are embracing the black stainless trend in everything from their major appliances to their stand mixers. Now, consumers can extend this unique finish to their faucets.

To address design trends and preferences, Delta Faucet Canada recently introduced a new black stainless finish. Less reflective and warmer than traditional stainless steel, the new finish offers a modern look that pairs well with black stainless appliances, as well as a variety of other finishes. Have traditional white appliances in your kitchen? Consider switching to black stainless faucets for a completely new monochrome look – one of the biggest trends following IDS 2018.

The new black stainless finish will be available starting in February 2018 exclusively on Delta’s Trinsic Pro Collection.

Laundry room makeover

Latest News

Laundry room makeover

Laundry room update is the perfect opportunity to add a pop of colour and create more strategic storage.

By Lisa Canning

A design dilemma if ever there was one: How to create a customized space for a room that had to serve many different purposes. Without a basement, garage or garden shed, the space had to be able to store off-season clothing, sports equipment, paint cans, as well as random odds and ends. Plus, it had to function as a laundry room.

If you’re looking to give your laundry room a refresh soon, here are a few ways you can add some custom elements to your space.

Start With Colour
I think the laundry room is the perfect spot to inject a bold hit of colour — you can be more adventurous than you might typically be in a bedroom or living room. With all the natural light in this space, I knew we could go dark and bold, so I used Benjamin Moore’s Bermuda Blue on the custom cabinets and picked up the colour in a beautiful patterned rug from HomeSense and striped towels by Pamuk and Co. Bright, bold colour in any application (but especially in painted millwork) can really make a space look and feel more custom and original.

Add Architectural Details
Another way to instantly make a space look custom is to add architectural details. We changed the swing on the original door to open against the staircase to maximize the space in the laundry room and replaced the interior door with a beautiful Metrie Pretty Simple door with Millennium patterned glass. In addition, we wrapped the entire room in Metrie’s MDF tongue and groove to create a shiplap look. I like shiplap (and all mouldings, really) as it provides a subtle texture to a room.

Customize Your Storage

Strategic storage makes me really happy. Proper storage is essential to keeping a space clutter free and a family from feeling overwhelmed by stuff. The millwork I designed for this room is 36-inches deep to give the family lots of space for large, bulky storage. But to make sure these large cavities remain really practical, I used a series of large, easy-view bins by Neatfreak to keep things that require more frequent access — like towels and cleaning supplies — in plain sight. The triple-sorter laundry system with built-in ironing board, also from Neatfreak, allows the family to create an additional surface area for laundry sorting and folding and eliminates the need for a folding ironing board, saving precious storage space.

Lastly, we created custom floating shelves out of the same Belanger laminate counter we used to provide the room for additional storage and decorative display.

Add Some Bling
I love me some handcrafted cabinet hardware, and these pieces by Shayne Fox Hardware are my current obsession. These bright bronze pulls and knobs are made out of cast bronze and are finished in what is called a living finish — they are going to oxidize and patina over time.

And we continued my obsession with all things bronze with the Cassidy faucet by Delta in Champagne Bronze. A small hit of a warm metal is a really on trend way to provide a custom element in your laundry room.

Customize Your Cleaning
And finally, don’t forget you can customize the most important aspect of your laundry room, your washer and dryer. We selected a stackable pair by Whirlpool to maximize all available space. The front load machines offer a multitude of settings that allow the family to wash and dry everything from well-worn sports gear, to delicate dance costumes. Available in three finishes, we went white as a bold contrast against the blue cabinetry.

Drama and colour will be the hot trend in home decorating

by Jo Alcorn

I love when the new trends for the upcoming year are revealed. It’s the perfect time to update your decor and freshen up your home. This year I am seeing (and loving) all things dramatic. Bronze decor, patterned wall treatments, beautifully bold pillows and all things brass. Here is a sneak peak at the trends I see emerging this year, many of which will be incorporated into my 2018 makeover projects.

This year, expect to see big and bold patterns and more items made in Canada. That’s certainly the case for my line of product, from matching dog beds and throw pillows, to the new wallpaper line, both are following these trends. Made-in-Canada and big bold patterns. Wallpaper $179, dog bed $129.99

The on-trend hosts will have brass silverware and plates. Brass is no longer just for your decor, you will now see it in table settings, flatware glasses and more. These beauties are from Wayfair.ca: cutlery $179.99

As the bronze trend continues, expect to see splashes of bronze throughout the home: on top of mantels, on media units, in wall decor and more. Looking for the perfect bronze decor? HomeSense has you covered from lamps and clocks to bookends and artwork.  Light $79.99; bowl $19.99; InstaFood sign $16.99

Look for a mix of materials in furniture pieces this year. This gorgeous multi-function piece is from Structube and it incorporates all the trends I am seeing this coming year – a mix of wood, glass and a metal frame along with drawers, making it the perfect blend of function meets style. Table $399

Step aside stainless steel because the new kid in town is Sunset Bronze. In 2018, it’s all about statement appliances. Functional and bold, the Sunset Bronze kitchen suite from Whirlpool brings warmth to any kitchen with its rich metallic finish. This statement suite of appliances is the very set I chose for my own kitchen reno (stay tuned for that reveal in early 2018). I wanted to go big or go bold in 2018, so this set met my criteria perfect. Pricing TBD

This year I am loving all things black in the bathroom. This trend is drastically different and really packs a punch when you enter the bathroom. The inky and edgy sophistication of matte black is the go-to finish for the design-savvy homeowner looking for a dose of drama in their space. From shower heads to faucets and towel bars and hooks, these black beauties from Delta Faucet are offered in a variety of show stopping collections including the Trinsic and Ara.

Delta Trinsic contemporary floor mount faucet $1,713.25

Delta Ara Monitor 17 Series H2Okinetic tub & shower trim $466.10

In addition to black and bronze, pink is red hot this year in wall colours, accessories and accent pieces. Want to add a bit of blush to your setting? Check out the super affordable ideas from Bouclair, from side tables and throws to artwork and accessories, they’ll have you tickled pink. Table 79.99; throw: 29.99

You all know I am obsessed with white. But this year it’s time for my love affair with white to take a backseat while I introduce bright, bold and powerful colours into my designs. It started slowly in 2017, but wait and see what I have in store for 2018. I am forecasting a mix of pinks and reds — used in the same space — for a few of my upcoming makeovers. Stay tuned for some dramatic and bold, on-trend makeovers. Here is one of the colours I think will be hot in 2018, Pleasant Pink by Benjamin Moore. From $49.99 gallon
