TORONTO FALL HOME SHOW: Stuck For Space?
Look up for your next storage solution
Would you trade square footage for a prime location and easy access to the best in food and entertainment? If you said yes, chances are, like many Torontonians, you’ve chosen to forfeit space to be downtown where the action is.
Although small spaces present unique storage challenges, have no fear — celebrity interior designer Linda Mazur has paired up with the 2018 Toronto Fall Home Show to provide those living in tight quarters a way to make the most of the space they do have.
“Thinking vertically is a design must when it comes to small spaces and storage solutions,” says Mazur. “There are several ways your small space can work for you without compromising the design aesthetic of your home.”
The original Murphy bed has inspired thousands of new, convertible furniture items that can be tucked away or collapsed when not in use for extra space. Try finding a table that flips up against the wall featuring a pegboard underneath to keep yourself organized.
Your footprint might be small, but there are quite a few places in apartments and condos that go totally unused, including doors. Adding a shelf above your doorframe will create sleek extra storage solution.
USE THE CEILING
Surface space may be lacking to display plants, collectables and books, especially if you have no room for even a side table. Why not use the ceiling? Suspend shelving or modern macramé baskets for a bohemian storage solution that keeps your floorspace clear and clutter free.
Force your wall furniture into double-duty with hidden storage compartments that still look trendy. Instead of wasting the wall behind your bed with a headboard, try replacing it with a bookshelf. Voila! Talk about using your head.
CREATE YOUR OWN LOFT
When in doubt, make a new floor. Build a platform for your bed to create usable space underneath. Add a built-in desk underneath with extra drawers, create a cozy TV nook with a space for blankets or turn the stairs leading up to your new bedroom into an extra bookshelf.
