Supply runs for contractors across the country may take a bit longer next year. In November, Lowe’s Companies Inc., the U.S.-based owner of Lowe’s and Rona retail outlets, announced that it would be shuttering 34 stores in Canada at the beginning of next year.

“While making decisions that impact our associates and their families is never easy, closing underperforming stores is a necessary step in our plan to ensure the long-term stability and growth of our Canadian business,” said Lowe’s Canada Interim President, Tony Cioffi, in a statement announcing the closures .

Six of the stores operating under the Lowe’s banner and the Reno-Depot in Trois Rivières, Que. are closing. The rest are Rona-branded locations. Hardest hit is Quebec – where Rona was founded back in 1939 – with 12 outlets closing in the province. Four stores in the Toronto area (Mississauga, north Etobicoke, Ajax and Oshawa) are also closing.
