Fabrics are inspirational and one of the best places to start when designing a room

As a designer, I look forward to the start of a new project. I enjoy poring over fabric books gathering ideas and direction, and have been known to design an entire space just from the inspiration of one fabric. I love the feel of lush velvets, the beauty of some richly woven silks and the simplicity of linen. But as beautiful as some fabrics are, not every fabric is suitable for all applications. When working with our clients we try to educate them in all aspects associated with the fabrics we are suggesting for their home, such as durability, care, pattern intricacy and colour.

Durability is determined by the “double-rub count” of a fabric. Fabrics are tested for the number of times a machine can pass back and forth over the fabric before it wears down. Personally, I tend to stay away from the lower rub counts for residential use, and tend not to do any upholstery in a fabric less than 9,000 – 12,000 double-rubs… just to be safe; or I would use these fabric on a low-usage piece of furniture like an occasional chair… for high-usage areas, the higher the rub count the better. You may have recently been hearing a lot of buzz about Crypton fabrics, or fabrics with Nano-tex plus Dura-Block. These are high-performance fabrics that are anti-microbial, stain and moisture-resistant. These are fabrics that are beyond “forgiving” and are fantastic for busy areas like family rooms.

As important as durability is in your fabric selection, equally important is pattern intricacy and colour. I love mixing colours and patterns, but it is important that the fabric you have selected is relevant for the required usage. Selecting the right fabric for your furniture and window treatments can be challenging. You should consider that the pattern scale and repeat of a particular fabric you love may not be the best choice for upholstering a diamond-tufted sofa, or for inverted-pleated drapery panels.

Continue the inspiring creation of your living space by introducing several different patterns, colours and textures. There are so many great fabric lines in the market to choose from. One of my all-time favourites is Robert Allen Fabrics. Be bold in your choices. If you find a pattern you love but are a bit hesitant to use it on a larger scale, try it in some toss cushions or perhaps and an ottoman. Many different fabric patterns, scales and colours can be mixed together to complement your rooms… just remember to keep a common element throughout.

Fabrics enhance the design of your space. They can soften architectural features, establish your colour palette and add excitement to your space with pattern and texture. Have fun with fabrics and bring your spaces alive.
