Modern high-rises wouldn’t exist without elevators to quickly transport occupants back-and-forth between the ground and the sky-high apartments and offices they live and work in. With a new prototype elevator system, high-rises might be able to expand as far horizontally as they do vertically. Taking a page from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator , German manufacturing giant ThyssenKrupp is testing a ropeless system dubbed MULTI, with cars that can travel in multiple directions. The hope is that by being able to operate multiple cabins per line, capacity can be increased by up to 50 percent.
