Design: Colour Your World

by Linda Mazur

Spring is here bringing with it a plethora of colour to brighten our world outside.

But it also brings the desire to change and refresh our homes. Satisfy that desire for change by bringing an inspirational colour scheme to your own living space and create a fresh new look and feel in your home.

This year’s array of popular colours are not only inspiring but easy to work with. Soft olive greens, cheerful bright yellows, soft pink, burnt corals, dusky blues and of course a crisp white to name a few. Adding colour to our lives this can be easier than you think. Of course there is the usual beautiful bunch of fresh florals that will brighten up any dull space, but what about the colourful array of new fabrics that we are seeing this season. Lightweight airy linens in an abundance of colours are just the thing to replace those heavy drapes on your windows and offer a light fresh feel to any living space. Select a soft blue for a cool crisp feel in your room, or perhaps this seasons shades of corals and yellows are more to your liking. Either way you will start to see colour emerge and your room come to life. A great resource for fabrics with new colour collections this season is Alendel Fabrics.

But don’t just stop at fabrics, there are many great ways to inject colour into our homes overall design. Victoria + Albert has introduced a popular range of external colour tones to help consumers coordinate their bathroom decor In addition to their original highgloss white ENGLISHCAST finish, the brand is now offering distinctive classic shades of grey and warm dark tones available in their entire line of freestanding tubs, basins and vanity furniture. Mid-tone neutrals like Stone or Light Grey strikes a happy balance between strong and soft that works in the bathroom. Make a strong statement with their bold new dark tones: Gloss Black and Anthracite, sure to enliven any space. Using a standout dark tone will make a neutral bathroom memorable — because “anything goes with black. ” So look to retire your tired “beige tones” for an inspirational sophisticated blend of colours, pattern and texture.

Here are some of my tips to inject some easy colour into your home

  1. Paint is always a great place to start. Any “weekend-warrior” can easily liven up a room with a gallon of paint.
  2. Wallpaper is a fantastic way to inject life into your room. With an abundant selection of patterns and colours, you’re sure to make a great impact. Check out my favourite brand, Farrow & Ball.
  3. Be bold in your selections and use of colour. If you love a particular colour but are unsure, use it in smaller doses as an accent instead of on a larger scale.
  4. Add a black element to your mix. It doesn’t always need to be a big item — a black lampshade or another accessory accent; by doing this you clarify and enhance all the other colours in the space.
