Announcing the choices for 2019 Colour of the Year from three of the top paint brands in Canada.

BENJAMIN MOORE

Benjamin Moore named Metropolitan , a stylish grey with cool undertones, as its Colour of the Year.

“Comforting, composed and effortlessly sophisticated, Metropolitan exudes beauty and balance,” says Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore director of strategic design intelligence. “It’s a colour in the neutral spectrum that references a contemplative state of mind and design. Not arresting nor aggressive, this understated yet glamorous grey creates a soothing, impactful common ground.”

The company also unveiled its Colour Trends 2019, a corresponding palette of 15 harmonious hues that further amplify the cultured grace of Metropolitan. Ranging from ethereal neutrals to frothy pinks to rich blues and greens.

Emphasizing the calming role grey plays in society, the Colour Trends 2019 colour card illustrates how to capture the coveted feeling of restorative quiet in any setting. Elements include the blending of heathered greys and soft linens to create an enveloping haze in a living room; utilizing reflective metallic accents and easygoing neutrals to add a comforting factor to a sleek kitchen; and creating a dose of modest allure to an elegant entryway by coating the walls, doors and trim in a bold navy blue.

PPG

The most impactful colour trends for the upcoming year will be closely tied to nature, according to the colour experts at PPG, and the PPG paint brand’s 2019 Colour of the Year, Night Watch is leading the way. Hand-selected by PPG’s global colour experts, this rich, luxurious, and classic shade of green will be at the forefront of design trends in 2019, and it allows homeowners to emulate the feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature in their spaces.

“The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” says Dee Schlotter, PPG senior colour marketing manager. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through colour. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

“Night Watch’s ability to invoke a deep connection to nature is universal, which allows the hue to be versatile for a variety of spaces and design segments – from healthcare to commercial and residential design,” adds Schlotter. “The colour can be incorporated into interiors as a focal accent wall in a bedroom or dining room, and it pairs nicely with gold or brass accents and décor. It can be especially impactful in places without any view or tie to the outdoors, like the end of a windowless hallway of a hospital. For exteriors, Night Watch is a gorgeous alternative to the trending black or deepest blue-black, and it works well as an accent on doors and shutters.”

BEAUTI-TONE

Beauti-Tone is taking a more dramatic look at 2019 with the release of its Simon Chang 2019-20 Trend Colour Collection. Made up of 24 hues, some traditional, some contemporary — and some that are downright edgy — this collection features many shades that are even deeper, richer and more intense than on previous Beauti-Tone trend colour cards.

“Much like the way we Canadians are embracing our individuality and flexing our muscles when it comes to our independence, this colour collection sets the tone for being different and setting yourself apart. Out of the ordinary is the new normal,” says Bev Bell, creative director, Beauti-Tone, a division of Home Hardware Stores.

Canadians are embracing luscious, saturated colours, experimenting more and finding joy and excitement when it all works well.

“Nothing helps the psyche more than to add a bit of edginess, and to love the result,” adds Bell.

While many of the colours can be used to paint an entire room, others, like Beauti-Tone’s Colour of the Year, Tropic of Conversation are fun to play with, either as an accent wall, on furniture pieces and interior doors, or hidden spots like inside closets or drawers.

“This bold colour choice is an homage to our positively powerful state of mind,” says Bell.

Tropic of Conversation is full of warmth, joy and positive energy. This vibrant orange hue is easy to engage with.

“I just love this colour because it is saturated in positivity,” enthuses Bell. Not intended to stand alone, it is a very social colour, beautiful to pair with softer or muted tones for maximum impact.

This is the sixth colourful collaboration between Canadian style icon Simon Chang and the design experts at Beauti-Tone, one of Canada’s largest Canadian-owned paint manufacturers. “Finding influence from the runway and taking inspiration from decor trends such as natural wood, classic whites, luxe high sheen fabrics and metal finishes,” says Simon Chang, “we created a collection of fashion-forward hues that are approachable, full of character and meant to expand your comfort zone.”

Beauti-Tone’s Simon Chang 2019/20 Trend Colour Collection colours and colour cards are available exclusively at Home Hardware, Home Building Centre and Home Hardware Building Centre locations across Canada.
