The National Home Show Continues to Meld Home and Design

by Dena Gouweloos

“Okay Google, make me some coffee.”

Imagine a morning where you didn’t have to roll out of bed, struggle to locate your slippers, shuffle to the kitchen and to painstakingly make yourself a cup of coffee just to get motivated in the morning. What if you could make a freshly-brewed pot from the comfort of your bed? Or, clean the house without having to lift a mop and getting your hands dirty? Or change the channel without a 15-minute search for the ever-elusive remote?

You can see why the concept of a hands-free, tech-filled home is appealing, but did you know it is also possible? Homes are getting “smarter,” more efficient and, above all, with small upgrades, new technology and connected appliances, homes are now reflecting our lifestyles and needs like never before.

“Tech-integrated homes are the way of the future,” says Denise Hayward, show manager for the National Home Show, presented by RE/MAX and co-located with Canada Blooms. “Connecting our living spaces through voice-activated controls and creating self-cleaning rooms are things we once thought only possible in sci-fi movies, but the reality is that it’s easier than ever a turn your space into a handsfree smart home.”

From automatic environment monitoring to voice-controlled everything, our homes have become an extension of our on-the-go lifestyles. The invention of home-automation systems like Google Home and Amazon Echo have revolutionized the way we live, with the option to integrate A.I. such as ‘Alexa’ and ‘Siri’ into everything from our kitchen appliances, thermostats, TVs, garage doors and much more. Gone are the days of coming home to a freezing cold house or forgetting your grocery list at home – press a button and the contents of your fridge are accessible at your fingertips.

“New tech adds an unprecedented level of convenience to the way we live, order food and even shop, so it seems fitting to access these tools in our homes,” adds Hayward. “Whether it’s a simple addition of a no-touch faucet to help keep hands germ-free and clean, or as complex as a new fridge with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities that sends a text when you’re low on milk, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come and how smoothly and seamlessly these new tools can be integrated into the design of your home.”

While we’ve yet to reach a Jetsons-level of high-tech furniture and conveyor belt floorboards, it’s hard to believe that total home automation isn’t the end goal for developers. Technology and innovation companies are continuing to build and improve upon connectivity and automation in household appliances, and consumers across every market are eager to discover what’s next for their homes.

The trend isn’t going away anytime soon, either—contractors, interior designers, builders and trade shows are featuring more home tech than ever before as new connections and hands-free tools are created. You can see how integrated tech and home design come together seamlessly at the Best Buy feature at the 2018 National Home Show.

GTA Home & Reno Show

GTA Home & Reno Show will inspire homeowners to use smart technology, master their next design project and make their home more energy savvy.

Steer your home renovation into the right lane at the GTA Home & Reno Show, presented by RE/MAX at the International Centre in Mississauga on February 16 to 19, 2018. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore more than 300 exhibitors, meet with the GTA’s top contractors, suppliers and design experts and be inspired by renovation and DIY celebrities.

“The GTA Home & Reno Show is a great resource for your next home project, big or small,” said show manager Tina Holmes. “There is always something to do at home, whether inside or outside. From a simple hardware upgrade to a massive renovation, consumers are looking for advice and the hands-on experience they need to tackle any project with confidence.

“This year’s stage lineup and onsite experiences ensure you are on route to transforming your house into a dream home.”

Turn Right at Inspiration

The GTA Home & Reno Show has an amazing lineup that will inspire homeowners to integrate smart technology into their space, master their next design project with ease and make their home more energy savvy.

Control 4, a mini starter home on wheels, showcases new smart home technology and how it can work behind the scenes to complement the decor of any residence.

The cheekily named Granny’s House shows that not all oldies are goodies. Tour this interactive space and experience everything that could be wrong with your home – from drafty outlets to inefficient windows – and learn how to make the right upgrades, saving you energy and reducing your monthly bills.

Inspiring new reno projects and DIY ideas is a stimulating lineup of Canada’s favourite design and renovation celebrities at the CasaLife Main Stage. Presented by Thomasville Cabinetry, HGTV’s Scott McGillivray will be sharing his top do-it-yourself tips. If you’re planning a renovation in 2018, don’t miss TV handyman Chris Palmer, CityLine’s Leigh-Ann Allaire and carpenter craftsman Jordan Spear. If craving design inspiration, don’t miss designers Linda Mazur and Rebecca Hay, as well as colour trend Expert Janice Fedak.

Turn Left at Expert Advice

Once inspired, start planning by sitting down one-on-one with an expert. Test your skills, or gain new skills at one of the show’s many interactive spaces, or bring your pictures, sketches and more for a free consultation with some of the industry’s best personnel:

DIY Tooling Centre: Chat with experts to learn how to handle the tools you need to undertake your next DIY project, from painting to plumbing.

Handyman’s Corner: Canada’s ultimate handyman, Shawn Monteith, will be here to share his secrets, from patching walls to tackling trim.

Destination Renovation presented by BILD & RenoMark: Meet face-to-face with renovators and builders alike for a no-nonsense, one-on-one construction consultations that will save you valuable time and money.

Design Intervention presented by Reno & Decor Magazine:  Celebrity interior designers and decorators will be on hand to offer individual consultations, free advice and expert tips.

Ask a Certified Landscape Design Expert: Transform your outdoor space with a custom 15-minute complimentary talk with top garden and landscape experts.

Toronto Fall Home Show 2017 – ReCap

teb Interiors Inc. had the distinct honour of designing this years RENO & DECOR Design Intervention booth at the 2017 Fall Home Show and I have to say that it was an exhilarating experience.  It was an amazing creative outlet for us to help bend minds into thinking outside of the box. We have always been about trying to expand people’s thoughts and take them beyond their comfort zone and to not have so much fear about what other people will think of your space.

Allow your personality to shine through and let everyone else see it and embrace it.  You’re worth it!

Of course, this was not a one man show.  First of all, HOMES Publishing Group allowed us full freedom on whatever we could conjure up without any road blocks, so that opened the flood gates.  We received an overwhelming amount of support from some of our suppliers like, Rustik Design who, on top of enchanting the booth walls with his own artwork, custom made all the little skull corner pieces that complimented all the panel moulding that wrapped the booth.  Speaking of the panel moulding, Metrie is now our favourite ‘go to’ for moulding and doors.  They were more than willing to shower us with all the baseboard and panel moulding we needed to accomplish our goals.  The we needed to fill the space with furniture so in true fashion, our close friends at Design Republic stepped up to the plate and gave us anything and everything we needed.  Digging those rustic and industrial light fixtures?  Those are the brain children of Adam Fullerton, make sure you check out his Instagram, especially the custom ceiling light fixture he created out of a vintage Drum kit.  But I have to say that the one thing that reached out and lured people to the booth had to be the custom wallpapers.  Especially the Wonder Woman vignette.  Ruth Baker Design and teb Interiors Inc. are a force not to be reckoned with when it comes to creating outstanding custom wallpapers and murals.  I double dog dare you to argue that point.

Was it exhausting?  Hell, yeah.  Would we do it again?  Abso-freaking-lutely.  You may just see us again sooner than you think.

National Home Show 2017 – ReCap

The Reno and Decor booth for the National Home show was a wonderful opportunity to have visitors to the show experience two very different colour pallets and to visually get the answers to questions they often struggle with at home.  Each side was like two separate pages of the magazine but each designed and styled beautifully.

The ideas of good design are consistent regardless of whether a homeowner wishes to like in that colour palette.  Being able to work with a variety of attendees of the “Design Intervention” workshops in an environment that often exemplified the answers to challenges was amazingly helpful.

The caliber of questions and the preparation that went into the questions, made it very clear that many many people  can use the assistance of a design professional, regardless of the size of the project.  It was a wonderful collection of extremely talented design professionals we are proud to call colleagues and friends.  This was a success for the magazine, for the consumers and for the design professionals who worked on the space and with those consumers.

GTA Home and Reno Show offers tips and tricks for all homeowners

by Bryan Tuckey

If you are considering a home renovation or just bought a new home and need some inspiration or expert advice, visit the GTA Home and Reno Show.

The show runs February 17-20, 2017 at the International Centre in Mississauga and is all about home renovation and repair. It features more than 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest products and services to suit everyone’s renovation wants and needs.

If you are an aspiring do-it-yourselfer, you’ll love the Handyman’s Corner exhibit, where you can get tips and tricks for your upcoming project from Canada’s Handyman Shawn Monteith. Every day Shawn will work with the audience on a number of common home improvement tasks. It’s a great way to learn more about things such as painting, grouting or drywall repair.

You’ll find even more celebrities and seminars at the Casalife Main Stage. From maximizing the space inside your home to boosting its resale value, there will always be something happening on the stage, so check out the full schedule at gtahomeandrenoshow.com.

Colin and Justin
Colin and Justin

Some of the celebrity appearances you can look forward to include design duo Colin and Justin, HGTV’s renovation expert and Dragons’ Den contestant Damon Bennett and Cityline’s DIY and design expert Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault.

A must-see presentation for anyone planning a home renovation is the Five Steps to a Successful Renovation seminar, which will take place at the Casalife Main Stage on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at noon.

Two professional RenoMark renovators will walk through the five essential steps to a home or condominium renovation, offer helpful tips and answer questions from the audience. The seminar will guide you through the early planning stages of a renovation, outline what you should know about permits and point out what to look for when hiring a renovator.

Another great source of professional renovation advice is Destination Renovation, BILD’s featured exhibit at the show. It will have a team of RenoMark renovators sharing their expertise and offering helpful renovation tips. Feel free to bring your photos, sketches and floor plans.

Destination Renovation is also a great place to learn about the national RenoMark program and how it can help you find professional renovators, trade contractors and custom builders. The program was created by BILD in Toronto in 2001 and was so well received it has since expanded nationwide.

All RenoMark renovators operate under a code of conduct that commits them to providing a written contract for all jobs, offering a minimum two-year warranty and having at least $2 million worth of liability insurance.

Tickets for the GTA Home and Reno Show can be purchased online at gtahomeandrenoshow.com. Just a reminder that parking at the International Centre is free.

I hope you enjoy the show.
