Granted Canada’s first-ever LEED Platinum certification for a highrise for River Park Condominium at Uptown MarkhamRiver Park Condominium at Uptown Markham by Markham-based real estate developer Times Group has been granted LEED Platinum v2009 Certification by the Canada Green Building Council, the only 10-storey-plus building to meet this new level in all of Canada.River Park achieved LEED NC v2009 Platinum on May 5 with 80 points. This prestigious status represents a major achievement in sustainable design and construction. Previously only one other building in Ontario and two others in Canada had met the older LEED New Construction (NC) v2002 Platinum certification criteria for multi-unit residential buildings over 10 storeys.Through Enbridge’s Savings by Design Program, Times Group is proud to be building above and beyond the Ontario Building Code, boasting over 25 per cent better energy performance than required by code. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program is an industry-leading independently audited green building standard whereby points are awarded for energy and water efficiency, site ecology issues, indoor air quality, the use of envonmental building materials and climate change initiatives.River Park at Uptown Markham — located at 8200 Birchmount Road — consists of 4 high-density towers in two separate podiums that include a grand total of 607 residential suites. To meet LEED’s rigorous Platinum Certification, this development was designed to maximize water efficiency both through reduced consumption of water and reduced production of wastewater. In total, the reduction in water use is approximately 50 per cent compared to the level normally used for a development of this size. The development has also been designed to maximize energy efficiency, utilizing heat recovery ventilators, efficient lighting, high performance windows, district energy and an ultraefficient building architecture to generate 54 per cent energy cost savings compared to conventional construction approaches.River Park at Uptown Markham was even constructed to maximize the use of locally sourced and recycled materials, and construction waste was carefully minimized throughout the build process.Residents here are also enjoying the high indoor environmental quality created by using building materials that are proven to be low emitters of indoor air pollutants, particularly materials that contain low volatile organic compounds (VOC).Times Group is an award-winning green builder and a premier name in the industry with over 30 years of business and a record of excellence across the real estate development spectrum of the Greater Toronto Area.Inspired by core family values, Times Group has become a leading player in the land acquisition, planning, design, development and construction of premium-quality commercial and residential properties.
