Buying a new home or condominium may well be the biggest purchase of your lifetime.So, it’s a wise decision to do as much research about your builder as possible.One easy way to do this is to check out the Ontario Builder Directory (OBD), a database of registered builders in the province that is maintained by Tarion, the organization that regulates builders and backstops the Ontario new home warranty program.The Directory provides information about whether your builder is licensed to build in Ontario — which is a legal requirement — or has had their licence refused or revoked.It also tells you how many homes the builder has built and where they are located, whether the builder has had any chargeable conciliations, and whether there have been any warranty claims that Tarion has had to resolve on the builder’s behalf.The Directory has recently been updated and now has a lot of new features to help Ontario consumers do a more thorough job of researching builders.
