The new museum is supported by Enbridge to help create a superior building for today and the future

The Canadian Canoe Museum will be moving to a new home beside the National Historic site of the Peterborough Lift Lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway. This new location will physically connect the more than 600 watercraft in the museum's collection to the waterways of the country and provide enhanced opportunities for visitors, including the diverse water-related programming and associated activities that can be offered by the museum at the historic site.The visionary design for the new museum was created by heneghan peng architects of Dublin, Ireland, in a joint venture with Toronto's Kearns Mancini Architects. The team's elegant, serpentine glass pavilion graced by a stunning green roof was chosen as part of a two-stage international architectural design competition, the first stage of which garnered close to 100 entries from around the world. The submission stood apart from the others as the design works organically with the land rather than overwhelming it.This innovative new facility will be key in the stewardship of this national cultural asset. Re-locating the museum's world-class collection to this new purpose-built home will ensure the long-term care and integrity of its remarkable and important array of artifacts and archival materials. The new galleries and collection storage will be designed to meet the Canadian Conservation Institute's Category A Conservation Standards. Approximately 19,000-square-feet of exhibit space is expected to feature 10 to 12 galleries, among them "The Artist, The Land and the Canoe" and "The Arctic."The organization is laying the groundwork for a successful capital campaign that will rely on support locally, provincially and nationally. Currently, the project is in the detailed design phase, providing the perfect opportunity to leverage Enbridge's program, Savings by Design (SBD). Enbridge takes pride in delivering programs like Savings by Design, a green building initiative that promotes environmental stewardship through reduced green house gas emissions, conservation of natural resources, habitat remediation and environmental education.Other highlights of the building design are:
  • High bay storage for artefacts that will be accessible to the public;
  • 250-seat multi-purpose room available for events and weddings;
  • Trent-Severn Canal Exhibition;
  • Artisanal workshops;
  • On-canal programming, winter and summer;
  • Connections to Trent-Severn bike path in front of the museum;
  • Outdoor terrace and public space for yoga, festivals and other programming;
  • Gift shop;
  • Café.
"We have an extraordinary opportunity before is to create a fresh museum experience that is profoundly Canadian and yet unlike any other," said Jeremy Ward, curator, The Canadian Canoe Museum.THE CANADIAN CANOE MUSEUMGo online for more information on this exciting project.CanoeMuseum.caEnbridgeGas.com
